Diarrhea is a disorder that occurs due to improper functioning of the digestive system. The main symptoms of diarrhea are loose motions and an increase in bowel movement. It is accompanied by dehydration, fever, bloating, weakness, painful cramps and vomiting. In many cases, the root cause of diarrhea is the indigestion of food. Other causes include unhealthy eating habits such as not washing raw fruits and vegetables before eating or overeating, bacterial infections, viral infections, food intolerances, and intestinal ailments like ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease bowel syndrome. You can easily get rid of diarrhea by following the below-listed home remedies.
Home Remedies for Diarrhea
Apples contain pectin which is what helps diarrhea by hardening the stool. The potassium and vitamin C found in apples help keep your body hydrated.
2. Black Tea
Make a cup of tea and do not add any milk to it. You can use honey instead of sugar and a few drops of lemon juice to improve the taste. Drink two cups of black tea every day till you feel better.
Those who have a severe case of diarrhea can mix four tablespoons of vinegar and one tablespoon of brown sugar in a glass of water. Drink a glass of this mixture every 6 hours. It may taste weird, but is an ideal remedy for diarrhea.
4. Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS)
Make a homemade ORS solution by mixing six teaspoons of sugar and ½ teaspoon of salt into 1 liter of clean drinking water. Drink the solution in an hour. Try drinking as much ORS in 12 hours as possible for better results. You can also get readymade flavored ORS sachets from your local chemist. ORS is an excellent diarrhea remedy for infants as well.
5. Lemon Juice
Mix the juice of 1 lemon with a glass of water and add a little bit of honey to make it taste like lemonade. Drink 3-4 glasses of it in a day. It will help reduce acidity and counteract the bacteria.
- Lemon rind is also an effective cure for diarrhea. Simply grind a lemon with the peel and add a pinch of salt to it. Mix well and take this three times a day.
Yogurt that contains live lactobacillus acidophilus or bifid bacterium bacterial cultures which is extremely good, as it helps body reinstate the good bacteria in your body. Eat two to three bowls of yogurt a day. Add a pinch of salt and some cumin powder to it.
7. Carrot Soup
Carrot has anti dyspeptic properties which make it an ideal food for children, as it helps their body recover the nutrients lost due to diarrhea. One should have a bowl of carrot soup everyday when suffering from diarrhea.
8. Fenugreek Seeds
Fenugreek seeds contain mucilage which is ideal for diarrhea treatment. Mix a tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in a bowl of yogurt and have this mixture three times in a day.
9. Apple Cider Vinegar
Add a tablespoon of ACV to a glass of plain water and drink a glass of this solution at least twice a day.
10. White Rice
Many people often wonder what to eat for diarrhea? It is recommended that you eat bland foods as they are easy to digest. Consume a small bowl of plain white rice mixed with yogurt. Do not add any other spices or sauces to this.
Ripe bananas contain potassium and pectin- a water-soluble fiber. Eat 4 to 5 bananas during the day to overcome diarrhea.
Boil a few potatoes until they become soft. Then remove the peel and smash them. Add a pinch of salt, a little bit of pepper and a teaspoon of butter. Eat them.
13. Black Seed Oil
How to stop diarrhea with black seed oil? Simply add a tablespoon of black seed oil to a bowl of plain yogurt and eat at least two bowls of this mixture until the diarrhea is cured.
Honey has antiseptic properties which protect the stomach from bad bacteria. You can choose to consume a teaspoon of honey every day or mix it with your black tea, ginger juice or lemon juice. Drink this mixture to stay hydrated.
Note – It is not advisable to give honey to infants as it can cause botulism.
Ginger tops the list of foods for diarrhea. It is also effective for children. Add grated ginger to a cup of water and boil it for five to ten minutes. 16. Orange Peel
