Bronchitis is a respiratory disorder that causes irritation and swelling in the mucous membranes in the bronchial tubes, which primarily carries air to and from the lungs. It can be categorized as acute and chronic. The acute bronchitis normally lasts for a short span while chronic bronchitis may take months or even years. The viruses or bacteria which annoy the bronchial tubes mainly cause this disease. Other causes may include infections, allergy, changes in the atmosphere, dusty air or fog, smoking, pollution, cough and cold. The most common symptoms for bronchitis include fever, tiredness, tightening of chest or chest pain, muscle ache, complications in breathing, nasal congestion, and coughing with mucous (yellowish or greenish). Here is a list of some effective home remedies to get rid of bronchitis.
Home Remedies for Bronchitis
The anti-viral and antibiotic properties of garlic treat acute bronchitis. Peel and chop 3 garlic cloves. Put in a glass of milk and boil it for a couple of minutes. Consume it at night before you sleep.
Every morning, consume 1 teaspoon of raw onion juice. For quick results, eat it on an empty stomach. You may also add some raw onions while cooking.
Simply add 1 teaspoon of honey as a sweetener in your regular cup of tea. Alternatively, you can also take warm lemon water and add honey to it.
4. Salt Water
Take a glass of warm water, add a teaspoon of salt and gargle with it. Do this number of times a day to fasten the healing process. Add the exact quantity of salt, as extra salt may worsen the problem.
5. Sesame Seeds
Mix together 1 teaspoon of linseed or flaxseed, a pinch of common salt, teaspoon of sesame seeds, and 1 teaspoon of honey. Consume this fusion on daily basis before going to bed. Alternatively, you can also mix 2 tablespoons of water and one-half teaspoon of dry sesame seed powder and drink it two times every day.
6. Epsom Salt
This remedy works wonders for acute bronchitis. In warm bath water, add one and a half kg of epsom salt. Mix well to dissolve the salt completely. Soak in the bathtub for about 30 minutes. For chronic bronchitis treatment, carry out this process two times a week and if you have acute bronchitis, perform this each night.
You can consume ginger in either ways:
- In a cup of hot water, add half a teaspoon each of cinnamon, ground ginger, and cloves. Consume this mixture for a couple of days to minimize the problem.
- Prepare herbal tea by mixing 1 teaspoon each of black pepper and ginger powder to a cup of boiling water. Leave it for a few minutes, add some honey, and drink this herbal tea two times daily.
- Mix 1 teaspoon each of pepper, ginger powder, and cloves. Consume this mixture thrice a day along with milk or honey.
Crush a few almonds and prepare a powder. Add this powder in orange juice and lemon and drink it once a day to get rid of bronchitis.
9. Cabbage Juice
Consume cabbage juice two times a day for 3 days to relieve the symptoms of bronchitis.
Simply drink orange juice and water for a minimum of 2 days to get rid of bronchitis in an easier way.
Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water every day to cure the problem of bronchitis. Alternatively, you can also drink vegetable soup and fruit juice.
12. Mustard Powder
Prepare a liquid paste by mixing 1 tablespoon of mustard powder, 4 tablespoons each of flour and water. Apply this paste directly on your chest.
Note – Do not use this remedy if you are allergic to mustard.
Boil a cup of water and add 2 teaspoons of dried mullein leaves. Steep for about 10 minutes, remove the wet leaves and consume this prepared tea three times a day regularly for quick relief.
14. Hot Shower
Instead of taking cough syrups, choose hot shower to provide warmth to chest. This is one of the best natural remedies for bronchitis.
Take a cup of boiling water and add a teaspoon of grated lemon rind. Mix well and leave the mixture for 5 minutes. Strain and consume this prepared lemon tea everyday to cure bronchitis.
Note – You may also use lemon wedge in place of lemon rind.
16. Hot Toddy
Boil some water and place a tea bag into it. Leave the mix for 5 to 10 minutes. Add a dash of honey, cinnamon powder, and alcohol to the solution. Mix well and consume it.
Humidify your surroundings with the help of a cool mist or warm humidifier to moisturize your surroundings. Don’t forget to clean the humidifier after using it.
18. Essential Oils
Prepare an herbal chest rub by mixing 10 drops each of thyme, rosemary oil, eucalyptus and peppermint oil and one-fourth cup of olive oil. Massage your throat and chest gently.
- Instead, mix 2-3 drops of anise essential oil and 1 teaspoon carrier oil (almond, jojoba, etc.) and massage your chest and throat with this oil.
Herbal Remedies to Treat Bronchitis
Turmeric is the common treatment for bronchitis. Boil a glass of milk and add 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder. Drink it 2 to 3 times a day. Consume it on an empty stomach for quick results.
20. Eucalyptus Oil
Mix some drops of eucalyptus oil in the boiling water. Now, use a towel to cover your head and inhale the steam. Or else, you can also apply it externally on the chest.
Extract some spinach juice from the spinach leaves. Add honey, water, and ammonium chloride to increase its effectiveness.
Take a cup of hot water and add one cup of linseeds to prepare a poultice. Boil the mixture and apply it on the back side and over the front side of your chest twice a day.
23. Licorice Root
Boil some water and add half teaspoon of licorice root. Strain and leave the mixture to cool down. Drink the solution at least three times a day. Continue the process for up to next 3 days to cure bronchitis naturally.
24. Castor Leaves
Take a pan and add some castor leaves. Roast them for 10 minutes and leave them to cool. Place them on your chest and let it stand for a whole night.
Take a cup of water and add 2 teaspoons of marshmallow root. Allow it to steep for 15 minutes. This herb soothes the mucus membrane; since it contains 30 percent of mucilage. Drink 2 to 3 cups a day to fasten the healing process.
Take a glass of water and add 2 teaspoons of peppermint leaves to it. Bring the mixture to boil for around 15 minutes. Strain the decoction and allow it to cool down. Drink this herbal tea 3 to 5 times daily.
This herb reduces the severity of cough problem and relieves inflammation. Mix dried root of lobelia in a cup of hot water and steep it for 10 to 15 minutes.
Note: Consult your doctor about the correct dosage of this herb before consuming it.
28. Savory Tea
In a cup of hot water, mix 1/2 teaspoon of savory tea. Leave the mixture for a couple of seconds. Filter the decoction and drink it.
The anti-inflammatory properties of this herb boost up the immune system and lower down the lung inflammation. It is recommended to have 200 mg of this herb twice a day.
Although, ginseng is available in capsules and tablets form, but tea is considered the best for treatment of bronchitis.
Add half teaspoon of dried thyme in a cup of boiling water. Mix well and let it stand for 5 minutes. Add some honey to sweeten the taste. Drink it on a regular basis at least once a day to relieve the problem.
- Alternatively, dilute 1 part of thyme oil in 2 parts of corn oil or olive oil. Now, massage your chest with this mixture.
31. Bay Leaf
Add dried or fresh bay leaf to a cup of boiling water and allow it to stand for a couple of minutes. Strain and drink this tea regularly.
- Alternatively, soak some leaves in hot water. Then, apply them on the chest, and cover them using a clean cloth.
32. Holy Basil
Eat raw basil leaves for instant relief; or else, you can also drink basil tea prepared from its leaves. You may also purchase from any natural food stores. Consume basil in either ways on a regular basis to get quick relief from bronchitis.
33. Malabar Nut
Chew leaves of this herbal plant along with the leaves of holy basil to obtain best results. Alternatively, prepare a liquid extract of the plant, mix it with some honey and consume 2 teaspoons of it daily.
34. Oregano Oil
Oregano oil is used for multiple health issues. To treat the problem related to bronchitis place some drops of this oil under your tongue once a day.
Take some hot water and steep a few fresh plantain leaves for a couple of minutes. Strain the solution and inhale the steam for a few minutes. Then drink this decoction.
- Add some hot spicy salsa, or cayenne pepper to your daily meals.
- Wash your hands regularly.
- Increase intake of food that are rich in vitamin C such as lemon, oranges, and other citrus fruits.
- Take proper rest.
- Wear mask or gloves every time you go outside.
- Keep your nose clean by using saline nasal sprays.
- Practice meditation, yoga, deep breathing, etc
- Keep your head high while sleeping
- Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.
