Jaundice is a liver disorder that ceases the detoxification process. It is basically a yellowish pigmentation that mainly occurs when level of the chemical bilirubin increases in the bloodstream due to some underlying condition. It is very common in newborn babies.

Generally, whites of the eyes and the yellowish staining of the skin are the most prominent of all other jaundice symptoms. The yellow color is first observed on the face which then spreads across the whole body. There are a number of other symptoms that may be seen, which includes itching, tiredness, weight loss, appetite loss, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, nausea, pale colored stools, lethargy, fever, dark yellow urine, bitter taste in the mouth, pain in the liver, etc.

There are a number of reasons for building up extensive bilirubin in the blood. These include a blockage in or near the liver that prevents the flow of bile, like pancreatitis or gallstones, a tumor in the bile duct, congenital defects (including biliary atresia), pancreatic cancer, pregnancy, or excessive breakdown of RBC that arises certain forms of anemia, and some infectious diseases like malaria. Homemade Remedies to get rid of Jaundice

1. Tomato Juice

Lycopene found in tomatoes reduces the liver injury. Take 500ml of water and allow it to boil. Add 4 to 5 tomatoes in the boiling water. Let it stand for 15 minutes. Peel the skin of a tomato and crush them. Extract their juice by pressing them on a sieve. Drink the prepared juice on an empty stomach each morning. For fast recovery, add some salt and pepper in the juice.

2. Turmeric Powder

Turmeric is popularly used for alleviating the symptoms of jaundice. Add two teaspoons of turmeric powder in 1 glass of water. Drink this solution at least three times on a daily basis.

3. Almonds, Dates, Cardamoms, Sugar and Butter

Soak 7 almonds, 2 dried dates, 3 small cardamoms in water overnight. Next morning, grind them to make a fine paste. Add 2 teaspoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of butter. Mix well and eat at least once a day.

4. Alum

Add a piece of alum on the frying pan and allow it to heat till it expands. Crush this expanded alum into powdered form. Add a pinch of this powdered alum into a small cup of fresh curd. Consume at least 1 cup of this curd thrice a day.

5. Banana

Mash a ripe banana and add 1 tablespoon of honey to it. Eat it twice for a couple of days.

6. Papaya

Prepare a fine paste using tender papaya leaves and take about half teaspoon of this paste along with water.

7. Barley Water

Clean the barley properly and remove any wreckage present. Now, boil a cup of barley in 3 liters of water and simmer it for 3 hrs. Drink 4 to 5 glasses of barley water on a daily basis until you recover completely.

  • Alternatively, soak some barley overnight and cook them in a pressure cooker till 7-8 whistles. Allow it to cool down. Then, strain and add your favorite flavors such as fruit juice, lemon juice or any sweetener to it.

8. Coriander Seeds Water

Drink 30 to 50 ml of coriander seeds water to alleviate the symptoms of jaundice naturally. Soak 2 tablespoons of coriander seed in 500 ml (1/2 liter) of water and allow it to boil. It reduces the yellowness of skin.

9. Spinach

Since the spinach is packed with abundant iron, doctors recommend it to the jaundice patients. Grind some chopped spinach in a juicer and have its juice. You can also add carrot to make the juice more effective.

10. Garlic

Consume some garlic cloves early in the morning on an empty stomach to speed-up the recovery process.

11. Gooseberry

Gooseberry juice has no side-effects and is considered 100% safe for the treatment of jaundice. To make its juice, wash and dry them first and put them in a separate bowl. Take a pressure cooker, and add one and half a cup of water. Place the bowl with gooseberry inside the cooker. After one whistle, take them off the stove and allow the bowl to cool down. Break the soft gooseberry into pieces and remove the seeds. Now, grind the sugar and salt along with its pieces in a mixing jar to prepare a fine paste. Add 2 to 3 spoons of this paste in a glass of water; stir well and drink it. You may add cardamom powder in the juice to add flavor.

12. Sugarcane

Sugarcane has a number of properties that regulates the proper functioning of liver and aids digestion. To prepare a home-made juice, take about 4 slices of sugarcane, peel off its outer layer with a knife and chop them into small pieces. Blend them in a mixing jar along with half cup of water, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and a small piece of ginger. Filter the prepared juice with a cloth to strain off the tiny particles and add sugar to taste. Drink this juice two times daily for effective results.

Note: Make sure you clean the sugarcane before extracting its juice.

13. Lemon

Lemon has anti-inflammatory properties that help cure jaundice. Squeeze two lemons in a glass of water and drink it up. Since it guards the liver cells against damage, drink lemon juice thrice a day.

14. Coconut water

Drink coconut water twice or thrice daily. It not only clears the urine but also reduces body heat.

15. Carrot Juice

Prepare a fresh carrot juice and consume it couple of times a day for curing jaundice. You may also include it in your daily diet.

16. Ginger

Mix ½ teaspoon ginger juice, 1 teaspoon each of mint juice and fresh lime. Drink this frequently to fasten the recovery process. You may add some honey to add flavor.

17. Beetroot and lemon

Combine a cup of beetroot juice and lemon juice in equal amount. Drink this on a regular basis for some days to obtain effectual results.

18. Bitter luffa

Pound and squeeze bitter luffa to extract the juice. Place some juice in your palms and inhale it through your nostrils. As a result of this, a yellowish liquid will run out of your nostrils. Moreover, you may also use seeds of bitter luffa for the similar reason.

19. Bitter gourd

Prepare a juice from fresh bitter gourd and take 2 spoons of it twice a day.  The yellowness of the eyes will fade away gradually.

20. Pomegranate

Eat a lot of ripped pomegranate or, you may also take pomegranate juice regularly. This is one of the best remedy for curing jaundice.

21. Buttermilk

Buttermilk does not contain any fat and, therefore, good for digestion. Prepare a glass of buttermilk and add a pinch each of black pepper powder, turmeric, and cumin seeds. To fasten the recovery process, drink this mixture thrice a day.

22. Curd

Take a bowl of yogurt once a day. Add a dash of turmeric powder to increase its effectiveness.

Note: Use turmeric stick instead of regular turmeric powder.

Herbal Remedies to Cure Jaundice

23. Lemon Leaves

Take one cup of water and allow it to boil. Add about 8 to 10 lemon leaves. Cover it with a lid and leave it for 4-5 minutes. Drink the prepared decoction for 4 to 5 days regularly.

24. Licorice

Prepare a fine powder by mixing 1 teaspoon each of crushed licorice root, rock salt, and chicory seeds. Take ½ teaspoon of mixture in water two times a day.

25. Radish Leaves

The juice prepared from radish leaves is a very effective remedy for curing jaundice. Crush handful of radish leaves and extract juice using a thin muslin cloth. In general, adults are recommended to drink half a liter of this juice for at least 8 to 10 days. This juice helps detoxify blood (in humans) and also brings back the lost appetite.

26. Basil Leaves

Add 7 to 8 crushed basil leaves in 200 ml of water.  Drink it at least 2 times a day. It regulates the bile production and promotes the normal functioning of the liver.

27. Bael

Take some bael leaves and grind them to make a fine paste. Take one teaspoon of this paste with a pinch of black pepper, followed by a cup of buttermilk.

28. Jaundice Berry

This herb is also known as Berberis Vultaris and is often advised to jaundice patients. Extract juice from the bark of this herb and take a teaspoon of it couple of times every day.

29. Pigeon Pea Leaves

Take a handful of pigeon pea leaves and crush them in order to extract the juice. Drink 60ml of this juice every day. Besides, you can also include its leguminous beans in your diet.

30. Chamomile

Tea prepared from chamomile herb is an effective cure for jaundice. Take 2 to 3 teaspoons of dried chamomile flowers and put them in a cup to make a chamomile tea. Pour some hot water into it. Allow it to infuse for about three minutes. Strain it into another cup with the help of a tea strainer. You may also add lemon juice and honey to it. Drink this tea at least once a day for some weeks.

31. Oregano

Add about two teaspoons of oregano in a cup of water and allow it to boil. Simmer the stove for 10 minutes and, subsequently, strain. Take this on a regular basis.

32. Pigeon Peas Leaves

Crush some pigeon pea leaves and extract some juice. Take at least 60ml of this extracted juice every day to cure jaundice.

33. Snake gourd leaves

This herb is often recommended by experts for treating jaundice. Add around 7-10 snake gourd leaves in a cup of water and boil it. Let it cool down. Now, take 10 to 15 coriander seeds in half a liter of water and boil it. Combine it with a mixture prepared previously. Drink it at least three times a day for effectual results.

34. Indian Aloe Vera Leaves

Prepare a mixture by combining the pulp of aloe vera leaves, black salt, and ginger. Consume this mixture every morning for 10 days.

35. Chicory Plant

Each and every part of the chicory plant (seeds, flowers or roots) is helpful in treating the liver problems. The juice prepared from the chicory plant helps cure the sluggishness of the liver, enlargement of a spleen, and promotes healthy secretion of the bile.

36. Margosa Leaves

Crush a few fresh leaves of margosa and extract its juice. Add ½ tablespoon of its juice and 2 tablespoon of sugar in a glass of water. Take this mixture early in the morning.

37. Hygrophila spinosa

The root of this plant is powerful in curing liver diseases like hepatitis and jaundice. Prepare a mixture of its root in water and take it twice or thrice a day.

38. Indian Sorrel (Oxalis corniculata)

This herb is helpful in curing jaundice. It works wonders when taken along with buttermilk.

Do’s

  • Drink filtered or boiled water.
  • Take foods that are rich in calcium and other minerals such as iron and magnesium.
  • Take fruits and vegetables in raw or steamed form. Besides, you can also drink their juices/soups.
  • Grapes, sweet potatoes, nuts are beneficial in jaundice.
  • Get proper rest.
  • Increase intake of bitter vegetables such as bitter gourd and the bitter variety of drumsticks.
  • Eat simple food especially on the first 3 days of jaundice. You may take a meal of porridge particularly rice gruel.
  • Eat a vegetable salad prepared from carrot, tomato, radish and its leaves, and include 2/3 slices of lemon.

Don’ts

  • Avoid consuming fried and spicy foods.
  • Don’t take carbohydrate rich foods, as they may worsen the condition.
  • Avoid cakes, chocolate, potato chips, pastries, colas, ice-creams.
  • Keep away from sea foods especially oysters, until and unless you are certain that they are from a reliable source.
  • Avoid drinking coffee, alcohol, tea, and non-pasteurized milk.
  • Legumes and pulses should be avoided.
  • Do not consume non-vegetarian foods for a certain period till the aftereffects of jaundice remain visible on skin.
  • Refrain from salt as it requires a difficult digestion process.
