Essential Oils for Asthma

Asthma is the chronic disease of lungs that blocks the flow of air by narrowing the airways. It generally causes wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, chest tightness, etc. (1). It can affect a person of any age and generally starts during childhood. The inflammation of the airways makes it swell and when they react the muscle around them tightens. There can be two types of asthma, allergic and non-allergic. Allergic asthma involves the weakness of the immune system whereas, non-allergic asthma is caused due to stress, smoke, cold air, anxiety, etc (2). There are many factors that can trigger the disease like dust, waste, pollen, etc. It is vital to treat the disease as soon as it is diagnosed, as it may be life-threatening, if not treated at the time.

But, you don’t have to spend a lot of amount on the medicines, when it can be treated with easily available essential oils. There are several essential oils for an asthma attack that can do wonders for you and your kid. Have a look.


1. Lavender Oil

The oil of lavender is one of the most useful remedies for asthma. It is anti-inflammatory in nature, and hence, can be used for bronchial asthma, as studies reveal (3).

To use the oil for asthma, mix the oil with eucalyptus or peppermint oil and inhale it. Repeat it daily for best results.

  • Alternatively, take a bowl filled with hot water and add a few drops of oil to it. Cover your head and the bowl with a towel. Inhale the steam to clear the airways.

2. Thyme Essential Oil

Natural Remedies for Nosebleed


1. Cold Compress

This is one of the easiest and proven methods to stop nosebleeds. It is often recommended to apply a cold compress when you are facing this problem (5).

Just take a few ice cubes and wrap them in a thin towel. Sit in a position such that your head is slightly tilted towards the back. Apply the pack on the bridge of the nose for at least 5 minutes. Keep on repeating this with a gap of some time in between, until the bleeding stops.

Note: Ignore the direct contact of the ice with your nose.

2. Pinch

The very first step that one must perform is to pinch the nose. It has been seen that pinching the nose for some time can stop the nosebleed (6).

Just pinch the soft part of your nose with thumb and index finger while sitting straight with head tilted forward. Put a gentle pressure on the nose. Do this for 5-10 minutes without releasing the finger. Breathe with your mouth, while doing this.

3. Cayenne Pepper

Consuming cayenne pepper is another effective remedy to stop bleeding nose.

Drinking cayenne pepper water has been proved to be a useful solution (7).

9. Petroleum Jelly

Sweet potatoes are not only delicious but also rich in many vitamins and minerals (1). There are many varieties of this potato, each having a different composition of nutrients. These can be identified by the color of the potatoes as they are available in the colors like red, yellow, purple, brown, white, and orange, etc. (2).

People often confuse them with yams, but both are totally different (3). These are also not closely related to regular potatoes and can be consumed raw, boiled, baked, or in steamed form (4).

Sweet Potato Nutritional Facts

Sweet potatoes are cholesterol-free and are low in fat (8). The roots contain 25-30% of the total carbohydrates of the tuber (9).

The amount of water in these potatoes is about 77%; protein is 1.6%, 3% fiber and carbohydrates are about 20% (10).

Dietary fibers that these potatoes contain are: cellulose– 31.19g/100 g, lignin– 16.85/100g, pectin -15.65/100gm, and hemicellulose– 11.38/100gm (11).

These potatoes are also a good source of protein and natural sugar (12).

The glycemic index of the potatoes can be reduced by boiling them, whereas, it can be increased by roasting or baking (13).

Vitamins and Minerals in Sweet Potato

Vitamin A

These potatoes have a good amount of vitamin A, especially the orange sweet potatoes (1516). 1. Papaya

How to Prepare?

Mash the chunks of banana in a bowl. Add lemon juice, honey, and oats to it. Let the mixture stand for 10 minutes. Apply the mixture to your face in a uniform manner. After 15 minutes, wash your face with water and pat dry.

7. Avocado and Banana Face Mask

Banana cleanses off the dirt from the skin. On the other hand, avocado adds a natural moisturizing element to the face mask (9). It hydrates the skin and keeps it soft and smooth.

17. Banana and Kiwi Face Pack

The face pack will enhance the quality of your skin. Bananas contain kaempferol and quercetin that protect the skin from inflammation. Kiwi controls the excess sebum and neutralizes free radicals, thus, slowing the signs of aging. Studies have shown that kiwifruit removes the dead tissues much faster than the commercially available ointments (21).

How to Prepare?

Peel the outer skin of kiwi and mash it with a banana. Add milk to it and stir. Apply the face pack on your face, and wash it with warm water. This pack may dry up the skin. To deal with that, add a few drops of olive oil.
