Are ladybugs / Asian lady beetle harmful? This question pops up in our mind as soon as we witness this pest inside our home. The answer is no. They are gardener’s friends and predators of garden pests like aphids and spider mites. Then why should we take steps to eliminate them? They might leave a yellow coloured liquid (their blood), when they sense danger, which can stain our clothes, walls, hands, and seems stinky. Home Remedies for Ladybugs
1. Vacuum Cleaner
Note: Empty vacuum bags after each use.
2. Diatomaceous Earth
It is a natural pesticide. Spread some food grade diatomaceous earth in the places where you suspect ladybugs. This pesticide dehydrates ladybugs. It is very effective to get rid of those pests that need a lot of water such as millipedes, slugs and sowbugs (4).
3. Camphor and Menthol Spray
Bio assays were used to study the effect off selected chemicals in getting rid of ladybugs. The result showed that camphor and menthol are most effective of the monoterpenoids tested (5). Mix some camphor and menthol in a spray bottle with little water; and spray around the areas where the ladybugs hide. Since they are sensitive to strong odor, this remedy will drive them away, without killing them (6).

Sprinkle some boric acid powder around the affected areas. This will cause the ladybugs to run away without killing them (9).

Ladybugs can’t withstand strong smell. You can take advantage of this and get rid of these pests by spraying citrus or citronella scent. Citronella is popularly used natural arthropod repellents as it have high vapour toxicity to insects (12).
You can even burn lemon-scented candles.

Place some bags of cloves or sprinkle some clove oil in the areas that are heavily infested by ladybugs. It will make them evacuate the place quickly (13).
9. Bay Leaves
Keep small pouches of bay leaves in the infested areas to drive ladybugs out (14).
Soak a rag in ammonia and use it to wipe windows, doors, and other surfaces (15).
- Instead of picking or killing ladybugs, sweep them out using broom (16, 17).
- Block all the cracks in your doors and windows (18, 19).
- Caulk the entire gap in the piping, door and window frames, etc., so that ladybirds could not enter the house (20, 21, 22).
- Avoid picking up ladybugs with your hands as it might stain your hands and clothes (23).
- Do not make use of bug bombs (24).
