Morning sickness is a common situation faced by most of the pregnant women. Morning sickness is when a woman feels like vomiting and nauseous during pregnancy. Tiredness, excessive stress, anxiousness, certain kinds of odor, several foods, travelling, vitamin or mineral deficiency are some of the causes of morning sickness that result in nausea and vomiting, backaches and headaches, constipation, swollen or tender breasts, exhaustion, sleepiness, food cravings, etc. Though it generally occurs in the morning, but it is not always necessary as it can happen at any time of the day. It is not a serious problem and you can easily get rid of the morning sickness symptoms with some simple remedies at home.
Home Remedies for Morning Sickness
1. Potato Chips
Munch on some potato chips to get rid of nausea. Salted potato chips works great in reducing the over-production of saliva, thereby, reduce nausea.
Note – Don’t eat potato chips in excess.
Lack of water content in the body may also give you the feeling of nausea. So, drink at least 8-10 glasses of water every day (2). You can also eat fruits which have high water content such as watermelons, melons, oranges, grapes and so on. If you have bad taste in your mouth and you feel like vomiting, rinse your mouth using a mixture of 3/4 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon baking soda and 4 cups warm water (3).
3. Fennel Seeds
Chew on some fennel seeds in order to soothe your stomach. You can also make a tea by steeping some fennel seeds in a cup of boiling water. Drink it to get rid of the nauseous feeling and morning sickness.
Cheese has lots of protein in it which is beneficial during pregnancy. So, you can eat either cottage cheese or mozzarella cheese as they have high protein and low fat content (4).
Lemon has soothing and calming effect which cures nausea and vomiting (5). Mix a few drops of lemon juice in a glass of water, and drink it to get relief from the morning sickness. Or else, put a few slices of lemon in a plastic bag and place them in the freezer. Suck on a slice whenever you feel nauseous.
One of the study proved that lemon inhalation aromatherapy reduced nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (6).
Crackers are good for easing the stomach and reducing the feeling of nausea. Start your day with crackers in the form of plain popcorn, or peanut butter crackers (7, 8). You can also eat dry cereal or pretzels to treat upset stomach which leads to morning sickness (9).
7. Bael Fruit
8. Vitamin B6
Eat vitamin B6 rich foods such as avocados. You can also take vitamin B6 supplements three times a day. This effectively reduces nausea and the urge to vomiting (12, 13). Increase vitamin B content in your diet to avoid nausea and vomiting (14).
Note – Consult your gynaecologist before taking any type of pill.
9. Try Yoga or Meditation
Stress can be one of the factors that cause morning sickness. So, try practising different yoga techniques or meditation to overcome stress (15).
Note – Don’t practice strenuous exercises without consulting your doctor.
Press an acupuncture point on your wrist. It helps release neurotransmitters such as endorphins or serotonin which, in turn, cure nausea and other symptoms of the morning sickness. You can wear acupressure wrist bands to cure morning sickness(16). There are guidelines that recommend acupuncture as a useful remedy to get rid of morning sickness experienced in early pregnancy (18).
Eat an apple to get relief of headache caused due to morning sickness. Alternatively, you can also drink apple juice (19). Consume diet rich in protein and carbohydrates. Apply peanut butter on apple slice and eat this to avert morning sickness (20).
12. Indulge in a Relaxing Bath
Put a few drops of essential oil in your bath water and bathe with it for effective results.
13. Milk Toast
Bread is a bland diet that is used to treat nausea (21). Heat (don’t boil) a cup of milk. Toast a bread piece. Spread unsalted butter on it and crumble it into the milk. Eat slowly. This remedy will soothe your irritated stomach.
Note – Do not eat it if you are suffering from gastroenteritis.
14. Cool Compress
Apply cold compress to get rid of headache in early pregnancy and to reduce stress level (22).
Cumin is a traditional therapy to cure morning sickness (23). Add 1/2 tbsp of cumin powder to a glass of warm water and drink this.
Herbal Remedies for Morning Sickness
Here are some natural remedies for curing morning sickness. However, you should consult your doctor before trying out any of the following remedies.
15. Chamomile Tea
Dried Chamomile flowers is a traditional remedy for many health problems including morning sickness, asthma, nervous complaint, skin diseases, etc (24). Chamomile as a digestive relaxant is used to cure nausea (25, 26). Sip a cup of chamomile tea whenever you experience the feeling of nausea.
16. Lavender & Thyme
Many studies have proved significant use of lavender and thyme oil in treatment of nausea (27). Pour a few drops of lavender or thyme essential oil on your handkerchief. Smell it. This will give you quick relief from nausea (28).
Although studies regarding effect of essential oil on morning sickness are less but still some scents help cure morning sickness (29).
17. Curry Leaves
Extract the juice from some curry leaves. Now, mix it with a few drops of lemon juice and honey to make it taste better. Drink this juice at least twice or thrice a day to get rid of nausea.
18. Raspberry Leaf Tea
Raspberry leaf tea is also beneficial as it provides relief from morning sickness (30). It also helps relax the muscles of the uterus.
Note – Consult a doctor before having raspberry leaf tea as it may cause contractions in the uterus.
Ginger tea eases the morning sickness along with soothing the stomach. Grate a small piece of fresh ginger and add it to a cup of hot water. Let it steep for a five minutes. Strain and drink it. You can also add honey or sugar for taste (31). Alternatively, suck on a small piece of ginger (32). You can also use other ginger products like ginger candy and ginger soda to cure morning sickness (33).
A single blind clinical trial study conducted in selected prenatal care clinic of Isfahan City hospitals proved that ginger is an useful herbal remedy for curing nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (34).
Note – Don’t use this remedy if you have heartburn.
Also, don’t use anticoagulants with ginger (35).
Peppermint provides relief from nausea. The oil and leaves of this herb have medicinal properties (36, 37, 38). Steep a tablespoon of peppermint leaves in a cup of boiling water, and drink after straining it. Mix some sugar or honey to sweeten it.
- Alternatively, pour a few drops of peppermint essential oil on a handkerchief, and inhale its smell.
- Drink ample water and other fluids to stay hydrated (39, 40).
- Eat something in the morning as soon as you wake up (42).
- Step out in the morning to inhale some fresh air. This may relieve you of the symptoms of morning sickness.
- Keep your room ventilated to reduce odours (43, 44, 45).
- Eat before you get hungry to avoid nausea (46).
- Avoid overeating (47).
- Take proper rest (48).
- Do not eat and drink at the same time (49, 50).
- Don’t eat heavy meals, instead eat small portions frequently (51, 52).
- Avoid changing your posture more frequently (53).
- Avoid greasy, fatty, fried, salty and spicy foods, as well as artificial sweeteners and caffeine (54, 55, 56).
- Avoid smoking (57).
- Do not lie-down just after eating (58).
