Hickeys, commonly known as love bite or kiss imprint, are the marks that remind you of the intense moments you spent with your partner. Hickeys are not a problem until and unless you have to attend a public meeting or a family get-together. These are formed when the skin is bitten or sucked hard which results into broken capillaries. The symptoms may include a bruise-like appearance on the skin, purple or red coloration of the skin, swelling, and even a stroke in very rare cases. It gets cured on its own in 5-10 days and can be hidden with the help of make-up or clothes, but you can also use the following home remedies to get rid of hickeys.
Home Remedies for Hickeys
Ice can turn out to be very helpful as it constricts the blood vessels and diminishes the swelling. Apply ice to get rid of hickeys overnight. The way to apply ice is by wrapping a towel around it and pressing it gently on the affected portion.
Note- Do not directly apply the ice on the skin as it will worsen the situation.
Pineapples, apart from being tasty, contain bromelain which helps fade bruise and relieve pain. Cut some slices of pineapple and apply them on the hickey. Repeat the process 4-5 times a day for 10 minutes.
- Alternatively, you can dip a cloth in pineapple juice and apply it on the hickey.
3. Chilled Spoon
Chilled spoon can turn out to be another effective remedy for providing quick relief from pain and swelling. Take a spoon or two and keep them in the freezer for some time. When chilled, apply them on the hickey.
Massaging the area will make the circulation of blood possible, which is clotted around the area. Instead of massaging in a circular motion, massage the area in one direction and then in the opposite, for 5-6 minutes, several times a day.
Alcohol has soothing, cooling and disinfectant properties. Rub it over the hickey with the help of a cotton ball and apply moisturizer afterwards, so that the skin doesn’t get dry. For the best results, apply it twice a day.
6. Banana Peels
Banana peels have cooling and soothing properties which make them a good agent to get relief from hickeys. Take a banana peel and cut it into the size of the hickey. Put it over it for about half an hour. Repeat the process 2-3 times a day.
Oranges are well-off in fibre and vitamin C, which help remove hickeys. Drink the fresh orange juice twice a day until the hickeys are cured.
8. Lipstick or Pen Cap
Take a lipstick, pen cap or any other cylindrical object, and roll it over the hickey gently. It’ll help in easy circulation of blood, and cure the hickey faster.
9. Warm Compress
If the hickey doesn’t vanish in 2 days, then you may try the process of warm compress. Dip a towel in warm water and apply it on the hickey. It will help improve the circulation of the blood and lighten the color of the hickey.
- Alternatively, you can put a hot water bottle or warm tea bag over the area.
Note- Do not apply warm water directly on the area.
10. Cocoa Butter
Cocoa butter is a natural moisturizer which is extracted from the cocoa beans and is very helpful in treating the skin diseases and decreasing the inflammation. After doing the warm compress, apply the cocoa butter and massage it gently for five minutes. For the best results, repeat this process 4-5 times a day.
Apply some amount of toothpaste on the hickey with the help of the finger. It may cause a tingling sensation but will help remove hickey quickly. After some time, wash it off with lukewarm water.
In order to break the blood clot and fasten the circulation of blood, use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rub it gently over the area 4-5 times a day.
Note- Do not rub the brush too hard.
The coin is very useful in breaking the blood clot. With the help of fingers, stretch the affected area tightly and then rub a coin gently over that part of the skin. You’ll see a sudden color change of the bruise.
You can use a comb to rub the hickey. All you have to do is rub a comb over it for some time. It may turn out to be a painful process, but it helps a lot.
15. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
ACV is one of the best and must try remedies to get rid of hickeys. Pour about 4-5 tablespoons of vinegar in a bowl of warm water. Apply it over the hickey. Repeat the process 3-4 times a day.
Note- Do not try this remedy before 36-48 hours of the formation of the hickey.
16. Tuna Oil
Apply tuna oil on the affected skin and leave it for 5 minutes. Then, wash off with water. Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E oil in tuna oil are supportive in the regeneration of the skin.
Herbal Remedies to Get Rid of Hickeys
17. Peppermint Oil
Massaging the peppermint oil is another foolproof method for getting rid of hickeys. It circulates the blood, which prevents formation of clot. To try this method, take a few drops of the oil and massage it on the skin for five minutes, 2-3 times a day. At first, there might be a tingling sensation, but it’ll help the bruise go away.
Note- Do not try this remedy for more than 2 days as it may cause irritation to the skin.
18. Aloe Vera Gel
One of the best herbal remedies to treat any kind of skin disease is aloe vera gel. It’ll help reduce the inflammation. Take aloe vera gel and apply it over the hickey, several times a day, and you’ll notice the difference.
19. Witch Hazel
Witch hazel is another very good herbal remedy which speeds up the process of healing. Take a cloth and dip it in witch hazel tea. Apply it on the hickey, several times a day.
- Alternatively, you can make a paste of witch hazel and apply it on the skin for a few minutes. Then, wash it off with the lukewarm water.
Parsley is a multi-vitamin and multi-nutrient herb which will do wonders for your skin. Make a paste of parsley and apply it to the affected area. Cover the area with a cloth. Remove it after an hour and repeat the process several times a day until you get rid of the hickey.
- You can cover the hickey with the help of makeup.
- Try to cover it by wearing a turtleneck top, scarf or hair.
- Consume a lot of vitamin K vegetables and fruits as they help treat the hickey early.
- Be patient while treating hickey, as it may take 2-3 days to cure it.
- Eat a lot of strawberries as they contain salicylic acid which acts as a natural blood thinner.
- Consume a lot of vitamin C-rich fruits for fast recovery.
- Do not apply cold objects, like meat, as it may turn out to be unhygienic.
- Avoid rubbing or scraping the hickey too hard; otherwise, it may hurt and leave the mark for longer.
