1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C strengthens your immune system by boosting up the production of white blood cells. It also clears the nasal passageways, and prevents the multiplication of viruses. Some foods that are well-off in vitamin C are – parsley, broccoli, tomatoes, cabbage, lemons, peaches, oranges, kiwi, strawberries, etc. You can also take vitamin C in the form of pills.

2. Pepper

Pepper, whether smelled, gargled in hot water, or eaten with a meal, helps decongest the sinuses or lungs, thereby relieves cold. The capsaicin in pepper loosens up the mucus, and eradicates the germs present in the nasal passage.

3. Garlic

The allicin in garlic triggers the production of white blood cells, and its antiseptic properties shield the immune system against cold. Chop 3-6 garlic cloves and boil them in a cup of water. Drink this soup 2-3 times a day. Or else, add 3-5 garlic oil drops in your soup or food to get relief of cold.

4. Onion

Mix equal quantities of honey and onion juice. Drink it at least once daily till you get relief from cold.

5. Salt Water Gargle

Gargling with warm salt water helps reduce the risk of bacterial infection from your throat and mouth. Dissolve ¼ – ½ teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water. Gargle with it.

6. Ginger

Add ginger to your food for quick respite from cold.

Wrap a tablespoon of carom seeds (crushed) in a cloth. Inhale it multiple times a day to open the blocked nose.

In order to break up congestion and cure cold, drink plenty of juice or water. It will moisten your throat and prevent dehydration.

11. Neti Pot

Mix 1 teaspoon baking soda with 3 teaspoons of salt (iodide-free). Keep this mixture in an airtight container. Add this mixture (1 teaspoon) to distilled or lukewarm water (8 ounce). Fill this solution in the bulb syringe. Tilt your head over a basin. Spray the salt water in your nose with the help of bulb syringe. While spraying the salt mixture in one nostril, close the other nostril by applying light pressure with fingers.

12. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of the best natural remedies to cure sore throat resulted due to cold. Boil 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (powdered) in a glass of water. Add some honey and pepper powder to it. Allow it to cool and then drink.

13. Homemade Drink

Mix 1 shot each of lemon juice and whiskey, 1 tablespoon of honey and little water. Drink this solution to get rid of cold.

14. Vicks Vaporub

Rub some vicks vaporub on your chest and nose to alleviate congestion. This is an excellent remedy to cure cold in children.

15. White Vinegar

Take some oil in a pan. Saute minced onion in it. Add cornmeal and vinegar to prepare a paste. Tie this paste in a muslin cloth, and put it on your chest or throat. Cover with a blanket or towel. Keep it for a minimum of 15 minutes.

16. Green Tea

Brew a cup of green tea and drink it 2-3 times a day. The antioxidants in green tea detoxify the body and prevent bacterial infection; consequently, cure cold.

17. Chamomile Tea

Like green tea, chamomile tea is also rich in antioxidants and is an effective herbal remedy for cold. Put a few chamomile leaves in a cup of boiling water. Steep them for a few minutes. Then strain the tea. Drink it several times a day.

18. Eucalyptus Oil

Inhale eucalyptus essential oil to slacken the phlegm. All you need to do is pour a few drops of eucalyptus oil in hot water, and breathe in-out twice or thrice a day.
