Home Remedies to Cure Angular Cheilitis

1. Olive Oil

Due to the rich anti-bacterial properties of olive oil, it has been used for millions of years to treat a variety of skin diseases and fight infection-causing organisms. Due to its excellent moisturizing property, it can be used for the treatment of angular cheilitis. All you need to do is apply warm olive oil on the affected area 2-3 times a day. Alternatively, you can add a few lemon drops to the warm olive oil mixture to improve the efficaciousness of the oil.

2. Baking Soda

Baking soda is of great help to the patients suffering from angular cheilitis. Make a paste of baking soda and water, and apply it to the affected part. Leave it to dry for some minutes. You can apply moisturizer after washing it so that it doesn’t make the portion dry.

3. Cucumber

The coolness of the cucumber is very helpful in relieving the pain. Cut thin slices of refrigerated cucumber and keep them on the affected area for a while.

4. Lemon

Lemon is a strong antioxidant and helps reduce the inflammation. Cut a slice of lemon and apply on the affected corners. It may cause some irritation and tingle. The use of lemon will fight the bacteria that are built up on the sides of the lips.

5. Coconut Oil

It is one of the excellent home remedies to treat angular cheilitis. All you have to do is apply some coconut oil on the affected area 2-3 times a day, to get the best results. Coconut oil acts as a moisturizer and helps remove the dryness of the lips. It works as an antibacterial and antifungal agent that makes it a perfect cure for the disease.

6. Cocoa Butter

It is a proven fact that cocoa butter acts as a moisturizer. Therefore, instead of using lip balms, you can apply cocoa butter. You’ll see a drastic change. The dried, chapped lips will turn smooth.

7. Vaseline Petroleum Jelly

Vaseline is free from the harmful chemicals. Application of Vaseline 4-5 times a day will remove the cracks and dryness. It prevents the contact of air with the lips; hence, stopping the bacterial growth and lessening the pain.

8. Lip Balms and Moisturizers

Unscented and unflavored lip balms and moisturizers can be applied to relieve the pain and slits in the affected area. Keep in mind that the balm or moisturizer shouldn’t contain any chemical as it may worsen the situation.

9. Homemade Mixture

To fill in the slits, you can prepare a very easy mixture at home. All you have to do is take 2 tablespoons of tea tree oil, 1 tablespoon of vitamin E oil and ½ tablespoon of Vaseline petroleum jelly. Mix them well until a mixture is prepared. Apply it 3-4 times a day for the best results.

10. Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is very effective in killing bacteria and fighting off the infection. So, if angular cheilitis is caused by bacterial infection, you can rub alcohol on it with the help of a cotton ball. At first, it may hurt a little, but will soon stop the bacterial growth.

Note – Alcohol doesn’t kill the fungus. So, if the reason of angular cheilitis is a fungal infection, rubbing alcohol will be of no use.

11. Glycerin

Glycerin can moisturize your lips for long without having any side effects. It is easily available in the medical stores. All you have to do is apply glycerin 3-4 times a day. Along with moisturizing, it will heal the cracks on the corner of the mouth.

12. Vitamin B Rich Food

Studies have revealed that one of the major causes of angular cheilitis is deficiency of vitamin B. Therefore, consumption of a diet comprising of vitamin B rich fruits and vegetables, such as spinach, tomato and carrots, helps cure the cracks really well. One should drink tomato soup and apple juice daily to avoid the recurrence of angular cheilitis.

13. Proper Hydration

Drinking the right amount of water is the best way to keep all the diseases away. The improper water level in the body is one of the major reasons why angular cheilitis happens. Drink about 10-12 glasses of water daily, and keep taking small sips of water in short intervals of time so as to keep yourself properly hydrated.

14. Wash the Affected Area with Dish Washing Liquid

If the root cause of angular cheilitis is a fungal infection, you can use an anti-fungal cream so as to clear the fungus and stop it from doing any further damage on the skin.

Note – A test should be done earlier so as to determine the cause of angular cheilitis.

16. Yoghurt

Another effective measure to reduce the effect of angular cheilitis on the skin is to apply yoghurt. Yoghurt contains live bacteria. You can apply it to the corner of the mouth overnight to let it do its job and moisturize the lips.

Note – Refrain using yoghurt on the skin if the reason of angular cheilitis is bacteria.

17. Listerine

Apply Listerine on the affected area as it helps eliminate the problem within a few days and lessens the pain because of its excellent anti-fungal properties.

18. Apple Cider Vinegar

Since apple cider vinegar has both antifungal and antibacterial properties, it can be used on angular cheilitis. Its cleansing properties deeply clean the skin and prevent further expansion of the disease. ACV should be applied at least once daily.

Note – Using ACV directly on the skin may cause some burning sensation; hence, it should be diluted before use.

19. Honey

Honey defends the skin from the infection-causing microorganisms. Dab honey on the affected area. Wash off after 15 minutes.

20. Aloe Vera

Application of aloe vera is a speedy and effectual cure for angular cheilitis as it is skin-friendly and has got antiseptic and healing properties. It helps alleviate the pain for long. Regular use of aloe vera clears the skin and cures angular cheilitis permanently. All you have to do is extract the aloe vera gel from its leaf and refrigerate it for a while.
