Stomach flu or gastroenteritis is a viral infection that leads to inflammation in the gastrointestinal system. It can be caused due to adenovirus, astrovirus, calicivirus, Norovirus and rotavirus. This is a contagious disease that generally occurs due to poor hygiene. Using the things of the infected person may also impinge on your health. The most common symptoms of the stomach flu are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, dehydration, fever, fatigue, headache, loss of appetite and body ache. 1. Banana

Bananas are really effective in treating diarrhea. They are easy to digest and rich in pectin and potassium. Therefore, eating ripe bananas is good for upset stomach.

2. Yogurt

Normally, dairy products are not considered good to consume during an upset stomach, but probiotics in yogurt help heal the bugs in your digestive system. Eat plain, unsweetened yogurt to get relief from the stomach flu.

3. Garlic

As garlic has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, it helps cure stomach flu. It soothes the stomach lining and gives relief from cramps, bloating, gas and indigestion.

4. Drink Fluids

While having the stomach flu, you lose your body fluids through diarrhea, vomiting and sweating. It is important to regain that fluid level in your body, to avoid dehydration. Drinking water is obviously helpful, but liquids, like clear broth, also help in the case of upset stomach. You can also put ice cubes in your mouth; it will aid in reducing nausea.

5. Ginger

Ginger is anti-inflammatory and antiviral in nature, thus, helps improve the digestion and heals the infection. It also gives relief from vomiting and nausea. Boil some chopped ginger in the hot water. Strain it, and sip this drink slowly. Repeat this remedy 2-3 times a day, to feel better.

6. Cinnamon

Cinnamon effectively cures the stomach flu as it is antibacterial and antiviral. It has a warm nature, which prevents chills and ache. Add one teaspoon of cinnamon powder in a cup of boiling water. Allow it to cool and then strain. After that, add one teaspoon of honey to it. Drink this tea thrice a day, for two days.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Apple cider vinegar is a rich source of pectin, which helps soothe the upset stomach. It also prevents vomiting, nausea, stomach ache and gas. Mix one teaspoon of ACV in a glass of water or any fruit juice. You can also add honey to it. Drink it to feel better.

8. Rice Water

Rice water is a very effective remedy to get rid of the stomach ache. It is high in electrolytes. Just boil ½ cup of rice along with six cups of water. When the rice becomes tender, strain it and let it cool for some time. Add ½ teaspoon each of honey and cinnamon powder to it. Sip this drink slowly after every hour to speed up the recovery process.

  • Alternatively, white rice can also be consumed as they are easy to digest.

9. Lemon

Lemon is acidic in nature; hence, it effectively heals the stomach flu.  The antimicrobial properties of lemon improve the immune system and fight off the virus. Add one or two teaspoons of lemon juice to a glass of water and drink it 30 minutes before the meal.

10. Salt & Sugar

You can make an effective rehydration drink just by adding salt and sugar. What you need to do is take four cups of water and add a tsp of salt and 8 tsp of sugar to it. Drink this solution several times a day, to prevent the symptoms of stomach flu.

Blueberries have antioxidants, fiber and antibiotics, which help retain water and prevent diarrhea. Have a handful of blueberries regularly to treat stomach flu naturally.
