Before you use any of the remedies, know how the problem actually begins and what its symptoms are. Dandruff is a scalp disorder which is also known as “Seborrheic Dermatitis”. Fortunately, it is a non-contagious condition which can easily be treated at home. The most common symptoms of dandruff are itchy scalp, white flakes and hair fall. A severe case of dandruff may cause acne on the face and scalp.


Home Remedies to Eliminate Dandruff

1. Plain Yogurt

Make partitions in your hair and apply some yogurt directly on the scalp. Keep it on for 10 – 20 minutes and then rinse it off. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo.

2. Aspirin

Crush a few aspirin tablets using a mortar and pestle. Now add the powdered aspirin to your shampoo. Now apply this shampoo on your hair and remember to leave it on for 2-3 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

This is one of the best and most effective dandruff remedies. Simply mix an equal amount of water and ACV and apply the mixture on your scalp. Massage it gently using your fingertips. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes and then wash your hair with warm water. Do this every day for a week.

Note – If you have unhealed scabs on your scalp, do not use this remedy; otherwise, you will feel burning sensation.

4. Baking Soda

Instead of your regular shampoo, use baking soda while washing your hair. Wet your hair and rub about a teaspoon of baking soda on your scalp and hair. Leave it on for a minute, and then rinse it off thoroughly. Keep doing this for two weeks. This remedy will stimulate your scalp to produce natural oil which will keep your scalp moisturized and free from dandruff.

  • Alternatively, mix a tablespoon of baking soda and juice of one lemon. Then apply the mixture on your scalp. Leave it on for a couple of minutes. Now wash it off and condition your hair using ACV.

5. Banana and ACV

Peel and mash a ripe banana in a bowl. Now add two cups of ACV to it. Mix well until both the ingredients are combined. Now make partitions of your hair and apply the paste on your scalp. Massage for 5 to 10 minutes and then leave it on for 30 minutes to an hour. Wash it off with water and repeat daily for a week. As the dandruff disappears, use this treatment once a week. It is an excellent dandruff remedy and works wonders for your hair.

6. White Vinegar

Mix equal amounts of white wine vinegar and malt vinegar in a bowl. Add an equal quantity of water to the bowl. Now wet your hair with cold. Pour the mixture on the top of your hair and massage vigorously so that it is absorbed by the scalp and hair. Leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes and then rinse it off with cold water again.

Make sure you clean the scalp properly so that all the dead skin comes off. Next mix ½ a teaspoon of baking soda with 40 ml of water. Mix until you see a slight froth. Now pour this mixture onto your damp hair and again massage vigorously on the scalp and hair. Leave it on for 3 to 5 minutes and then rinse it off with cold water. Make sure you clean the scalp properly.

Dry your hair using a towel to remove all the excess water and then let it dry naturally. Once it is dry, point your head downwards and run your fingers through your hair very gently, to remove any lose flakes.

7. Baby Oil

Gently massage your scalp with baby oil and then wrap your hair in a towel and leave it overnight. Wash it off in the morning using anti-dandruff shampoo.

8. Coconut Oil

This dandruff treatment is best suited for dry hair. Apply some coconut oil on your scalp, massaging gently. Keep it on for at least an hour and then wash it off with shampoo.

9. Fenugreek Seeds

Roughly grind a tablespoon of fenugreek seeds using a mortar and pestle. Now add two cups of water to the seeds and allow them to soak for a while. At night before going to bed, apply this mixture on your hair and scalp; leave it overnight. Next day rinse it off with warm water.

10. Honey

Mix honey, coconut oil, olive oil and yogurt in the ratio 2:2:2:3, to make a smooth thick paste. Spread the mixture over your head and gently massage it on the scalp down to the tip of your hair. It is best to do this in the bathroom full of steam. Let it sit for 20 minutes while you are in the steamy environment. Rinse it off with your shampoo. Make sure you clean the scalp properly but do not go overboard by rubbing your scalp as it may remove all the moisture that the honey rub provides.

11. Lemon Juice

Apply lemon juice all over your scalp and leave it on for 20 to 25 minutes. It may cause itching, but this is normal. Wash your hair with shampoo and repeat as frequently as possible.

  • Or else, mix together some yogurt and the juice of 1 lemon in a bowl. Apply this mixture on the scalp and gently massage your scalp with your fingertips. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash it off.  Repeat as often as possible until the dandruff disappears.

12. Egg Yolk

This is one of the effective home remedies for dandruff. Egg yolk helps fight dandruff and is an excellent conditioner for the hair was well. Whip the yolk of two eggs and apply directly on the scalp. Make sure your hair is dry. After you have applied all the egg yolk, put on a plastic shower cap and keep it on for an hour. Wash it off using your regular shampoo.

13. Olive Oil

Apply olive oil to your hair and leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes. Then wash it off. You can also apply olive oil at night before going to bed and wrap your hair in a towel so that the oil gets well absorbed by your scalp.

14. Mouthwash

Rinse your hair with shampoo. Then finally wash off with an alcohol-based mouthwash. This remedy prevents the growth of dandruff-causing yeast.

15. Epsom Salt

The abrasive crystals of epsom salt exfoliate the scalp naturally and help eliminate dead skin flakes and extra oil. Dampen your scalp and massage epsom salt on it for 2-3 minutes. Finally, rinse off with shampoo.

16. Ginger

The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger trigger the growth of hair and also keep dandruff under check. Take a ginger. Peel and grate it. Squeeze the ginger in a small bowl containing 4 ounces of sesame oil. Mix the ingredients and massage on your scalp. After sometime, rinse off with a mild shampoo.

Herbal Remedies for Getting Rid of Dandruff

Here are some natural remedies for dandruff.

17. Cedar Wood Oil

Mix together 10 drops of juniper, 7 drops of cedar wood, 10 drops of cypress, and 50 ml of any carrier oil. Apply directly on the scalp and gently rub it. Keep it on for an hour and then wash it off using a mild shampoo and warm water.

  • Alternatively, add the same amount of oils in a bowl (600 ml) of warm water. Rinse your hair with it. This will help keep the dandruff away.

18. Indian Lilac

This is one of the best natural dandruff remedies that have been used since ages. The Indian lilac plant has both anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties that help treat your scalp, itching and hair fall. Simply boil some water and add a handful of Indian lilac leaves to it. Strain the water and use it to rinse your hair. Repeat it at least two times in a week.

19. Tee Tree Oil

Purchase a shampoo that contains 5% tea tree oil and wash your hair with it. Rub it on the scalp and wait for 5 minutes before washing it off. Do this every day until the dandruff disappears.

  • Purchase Indian lilac capsules from local chemist or herbal shop. Open 2-4 capsules to get the powder inside. Add 4 tablespoons of oil to it. Mix properly and apply to the scalp. Leave it on for an hour or overnight and then wash it off with shampoo and conditioner.

Note: Your scalp may itch for a while, which is normal.

20. Aloe Vera Gel

How to treat dandruff using aloe vera? Aloe vera has anti-bacterial as well as antiviral properties that help fight bacteria and fungi present on the scalp and at the same time moisturize the scalp. Extract the gel from the aloe leaf and apply it on the scalp. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse it off.

21. Thyme

Since thyme has antifungal and antiseptic properties, it is an excellent remedy to cure dandruff naturally. Take two cups of water in a bowl and add 4 tablespoons of dry thyme to it. Boil the water for 15 minutes. Then strain the solution and keep aside until it cools down. Apply the solution on the scalp and leave it for 3 hours. Wash it off with warm water.

22. Lawsonia Inermis (Henna)

Grind some Lawsonia inermis leaves to form a powder. Add equal quantities of hair oil, lemon juice, tea powder and Indian gooseberry powder to it. Mix all the ingredients well. Apply on the scalp and leave it on for half an hour. Rinse off with a mild shampoo afterwards.

23. Basil Leaves

The antifungal and antibacterial properties of basil leaves make them an excellent home remedy for dandruff. Extract juice of basil leaves and mix it with the powder of Indian gooseberry leaves to make a paste. Apply it on the scalp and wash off with water after some time.

24. Soap Nuts

Soak 10-15 soap nuts in water for the whole night. Grind them in the morning and boil in water. Then strain it. Now add Indian gooseberry powder or juice to it. Add some water, if required, to make a paste. Wash off with a mild shampoo after 30 minutes.


  • If you are using a hair dryer to dry your hair, make sure it is on low heat as dry heat can make the dandruff come back.
  • Clean your comb or hairbrush with vinegar on a regular basis.
  • Use a small toothed comb to comb your hair.
  • Before you use any of the above dandruff cures make sure you do a patch test just to make sure you are not allergic to anything.
  • Keep your hair moisturized by using a conditioner at least three times in a week.
  • Your physical and mental health affects your hair as well. Make sure you eat well, exercise regularly and get enough sleep so that your immune system remains healthy and strong.
  • Always wear a swimming cap to protect your hair from the chlorine water.


  • Avoid scratching your head.
