Gout is a type of arthritis that mostly affects joints on the knees, ankles, wrists and hands. The most common cause of gout is an increase in the level of uric acid in the body. The uric acid forms rigid crystals in the joints which is very painful. People who are obese due to excessive consumption of alcohol and food high in purines (like fish and meat) get gout. Medications that help your body produce urine can also cause gout. The most common indications of gout are swelling of the toe, inflammation and pain in the joints. If not cured timely, it may result in uric acid kidney stones, diabetes, and hypertension. Here are some home remedies that will help you get rid of gout easily.


Home Remedies for Gout

1. Lemon Juice

Lemons are rich in vitamin C which helps make the tissues strong and also neutralize the surplus level of uric acid in the body. Take the juice of one lemon and add ½ a teaspoon of baking soda to it. Mix both the ingredients and allow the mixture to sit for a while. Now add the mixture to a glass of water and mix well. Drink this solution immediately and repeat again after a few hours.

  • Those who do not like the taste of baking soda can simply mix the juice of half a lemon and water in a glass and drink it. Drink at least 3 glasses in a day until the gout reduces.

2. Ginger

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties which reduces swelling in the joints. Mix equal amounts of ginger powder, turmeric powder and fenugreek powder. Take a teaspoon of this mixture with a glass of warm water every day in the morning and at night before going to bed.

  • Alternatively, drink ginger tea. Simply add ½ a teaspoon of ginger powder into a cup of hot water and let it steep for a few minutes. Drink this tea twice a day.
  • Or else, ginger can also be used externally on the affected area. Make a paste by grating a small piece of ginger and apply the paste on the affected area. Keep it on for half an hour and then wash it off. Do this every day until the pain reduces.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

ACV is an excellent gout pain relief remedy as it is acidic in nature. Add one teaspoon of ACV to a glass of warm water. Drink the solution twice a day. If you experience some positive results, you can increase the dose to three times a day.

  • Alternatively, you can mix equal amounts of ACV and honey and drink the solution two times during the day.

4. Cherries

Cherries taste yummy and are an excellent choice for gout treatment as they contain antioxidants that detoxify body and kidneys. Its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce swelling. You can choose to have cherries in any form you like. Either eat them in breakfast every day or have a glass of cherry juice mixed with pineapple.

5. Baking Soda

How to get rid of gout with the help of baking soda? Simply mix ½ a teaspoon of baking soda into a cup of water and drink it 3 times a day. Baking soda will help remove the buildup of uric acid in your blood, thus, cure the gout.

Note – People who suffer from hypertension should avoid using baking soda.

6. Activated Charcoal

Mix ½ cup of powdered charcoal and a little bit of water to make a paste. Now fill a bath tub with water and add charcoal paste to it. Soak your body in the bath tub for half an hour and then wash it off with clean water. Do this 3 times in a week for gout prevention. You can also make a thick paste and apply it directly on the toe. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then wash it off.

Note – There are charcoal capsules available in the market which you can take orally. However, consult your doctor if you are allergic to charcoal or if you suffer from any diseases related to the liver, kidney or any other form of serious illness.

7. Apples

Remember the old saying- ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’? Apples top the list of diet for gout food items. This is because apples are full of malic acid that helps counterbalance the effects of uric acid in your body. This, in turn, reduces the swelling and pain associated with gout.

8. Cold Water

Many people who suffer from gout make the mistake of applying an ice cube on the area that is swollen. This makes the condition worse as it damages the skin. Instead, you should immerse aching and swollen joints in a bath tub of cold water for 10 to 15 minutes. Do this several times in a week.

9. Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is rich in magnesium- a mineral that helps alleviate the symptoms of gout. You can soak the affected part of your body in a bath tub containing water and epsom salt.

10. Banana

Another fruit that is an excellent cure for gout is banana. The abundance of potassium in bananas melts the crystals and flushes them out of your system through urine. At the same time, vitamin C in bananas helps reduce the pain and swelling.

11. Grapes

Grapes are alkaline in nature and, therefore, fight against the uric acid. They serve as an excellent home remedy for gout.

12. Cayenne Pepper

Make a paste by mixing a tablespoon of powdered cayenne pepper with a little bit of water and then apply the paste on the affected area. Do it 3 times a day for better results.

13. Celery Seed Juice

Drink a glass of celery seed juice every day for gout relief. To make juice, boil the celery seeds in water and drink the liquid.

14. French Beans

Prepare juice of French beans and drink at least 1-2 glasses of it daily for at least a month. This juice helps eliminate the problem of gout completely.

15. Mustard

Grind some mustard to form powder. Add some wheat powder and water to make a paste. Apply this paste on the affected areas. Leave it on for the whole day. Use this remedy daily until you get relief from gout.

16. Castor Oil

Massage the affected area with castor oil to get relief from gout.

17. Juniper Oil

Like castor oil, juniper oil is also equally beneficial in treating the gout. Just massage the gout prone areas with juniper oil to get rid of this ailment.

Herbal Remedies for Gout

18. Devil’s Claw Root

This is one of the best natural remedies for gout. The herb has anti-inflammatory properties that will reduce the swelling and pain associated with gout. Mix ½ a teaspoon of devil’s claw powder into 1 cup of warm drinking water and cover it. Let the solution steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Then strain and drink the liquid. Drink a cup of devil’s claw tea every day.

19. Thyme Tea

Thyme has anti-inflammatory properties that help ease the swelling and pain. Add 2 teaspoons of thyme powder to a cup of hot water and drink it. You can add some honey to improve the taste.

20. Safflower

Safflower is an effective herb for curing gout. You can intake it in the form of capsules available in the market.

21. Elm Leaf Tea

Steep some fresh elm leaves in a cup of hot water for a few minutes. Then, strain it and sip slowly. Drink it regularly until the problem of gout completely subsides.

22. Bilberry Extract

The anthocyanosides in bilberry help stabilize the collagen which, in turn, improves the condition. You can obtain bilberry extract from your nearby herbalist shop.

23. Turmeric

This herb has been used since ages for healing various types of arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and gout. Therefore, include this herb in your diet.

24. Boswellia Serrata

Boswellia has anti-inflammatory properties that make it one of the effective gout cures. You can take it in the form of pill or tablet. Or else, massage the affected area with boswellia cream.
