Hiccups, also known as SDF (Synchronous Diaphragmatic Flutter) or singultus in medical terms, are the non-voluntary contractions of the diaphragm. Hiccups may be very irritating, and there is no specific reason for their occurrence. There are many conditions that can lead to hiccups like gas in stomach, acid reflux or heartburn, too much food intake, stretching of the tummy after drinking or having meals, or eating too rapidly. Spicy food, certain medications, and consumption of fizzy drinks can also cause hiccups at times.
