If you are allergic to changing weather, dust particles or experience difficulty in breathing often and feel suffocated or congested, then there are chances that you are suffering from asthma. This disease is not age-specific, and any person from a new born to old can suffer from it. Major causes of asthma are – allergies, tobacco smoke, air pollution, obesity, stress, tension and depression, heredity, lung infection, premature birth or certain foods like eggs, fish, soy, peanuts, etc. Symptoms of asthma include difficulty in breathing, wheezing or whistling sound while breathing, persistent coughing and tiredness while doing any physical activity, difficulty in lifting weight, and sleeplessness. This disease does not have a permanent cure or a prescribed medication, and its symptoms can flare up any day. But, by taking precautionary measures, you can suppress its symptoms. Following are some trusted home remedies to get rid of asthma, and live a healthy and happy life.
Home Remedies for Asthma Treatment
Boil 5-6 cloves in a cup of water. Add a tbsp of honey to it. This must be taken 2 times a day to reduce the symptoms of asthma.
Grate some ginger in a cup of boiling water. Let it steep for 5-10 minutes. Sip this tea 2-3 times a day after it cools.
- Alternatively, you can mix equal quantities of ginger juice, pomegranate juice and honey. Take this mixture 2-3 times a day.
- Or else, chew raw ginger mix with some salt.
3. Fenugreek Seeds
Boil some fenugreek seeds in a cup of boiling water. Add 1 tbsp of ginger juice and honey to it. Drink this at least once a day to overcome the symptoms of asthma.
4. Mustard Oil and Camphor
Heat some mustard oil with little camphor. Massage it on the upper back and chest. This must be done several times a day till the symptoms subside.
Wash 3 figs and soak them in a cup of water overnight. Drink this water in the morning. Do this regularly to get rid of asthma.
6. Coffee / Tea
Sip 1-2 cups of black coffee or tea every day. This acts as a natural bronchodilator; thus, help relax and clear the pathways.
Boil 2-3 cloves of garlic in ¼ cup of milk. Allow it to cool. Drink this mixture at least once every day. This is a natural remedy that will help clear congestion in your throat if taken in the early stages of asthmatic attack.
Chew raw onions as salad or cook them if the taste is not bearable. Its anti-inflammatory properties lessen constriction in the pharynx and larynx; thus, reduces inflammation in the lungs.
Include fish like cod, tuna, salmons, sardines, herring and mackerel in your diet at least twice a week. All these make your lungs function better and fight against asthmatic problem.
- Alternatively, you can opt for fish oils which can be taken along with milk, if you do not wish to have fish. These are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and work in the same way as leukotriene inhibitors.
Mix 1 tbsp of honey in a glass of warm water and drink it 2-3 times a day. Another option is to mix about 1 tbsp of honey with 1 tbsp of cinnamon powder and take it during bed time. This is the best natural remedy to get rid of asthma as it will remove phlegm from your throat and let you sleep well.
11. Lemon / Vitamin C
Add juice of half a lemon to a glass of water. Add sugar or honey as per your taste. Drink this regularly to curb the symptoms of asthma.
- Eat vitamin C rich fruits like blueberry, strawberry, papaya and oranges. Alternatively, cut all these fruits and sprinkle some lemon juice and sugar over them. This delicious combination is a very effective cure for asthma.
- Add 3 tbsp honey, ½ tbsp cinnamon and 1 tbsp lemon juice/ Mix them together and take it at bedtime. This is excellent recipe for treating bronchial disorders.
12. Carom Seeds
Boil a tbsp of carom seeds in 1 cup of water and then inhale the steam. This mixture is also good to drink.
- Alternatively, wrap some carom seeds in a cotton cloth and heat it in the microwave until it becomes hot. Put this on your chest and neck until it cools.
- Or else, make a paste of carom seeds and heat it. Add some jaggery to it. Eat 1-2 tbsp of this paste daily until you get relief from asthma.
Note – People with diabetes must avoid this remedy.
13. Radish Juice
Grate some radish and extract its juice. Add some honey and lemon juice to it. Drink it 1-2 times a day to have a clear respiratory tract.
14. Bitter Gourd
Grate some bitter gourd. Add some basil paste and honey to it. Mix them well and consume once daily. This is one of the best natural treatments for asthma.
15. Fennel Seeds
Fennel seeds are said to have flavonoids and antioxidants like quercetin and kaempferol which fight against free radicals in our body, along with treating infections and clearing respiratory tract.
16. Warm Milk
Add 1 tbsp each of olive oil and honey to a glass of warm milk. Drink this milk along with a few garlic cloves before breakfast in the morning.
Mix 1 tbsp of turmeric in 1 glass of warm milk and drink it 2 times a day to get relief in throat congestion and asthmatic wheezing.
- Mix ½ tbsp of turmeric powder with 2 tbsp of honey; and take on empty stomach in evening. This helps eliminate the primary symptoms of asthma.
18. ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar)
Add 1-2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar to 8 ounces of water. Also add 1 tbsp of honey to it. Take it regularly before meals. It will strengthen the lungs, digestive and immune system.

20. Evening Primrose Oil
Evening primrose oil has anti-inflammatory properties and its one of the best natural remedies for asthma. It is also available in the form of capsules. Two 500 milligrams capsules must be taken 3 times a day.
21. Licorice Root Tea
Boil some licorice root in water for a few minutes. Add lime juice and honey and consume it several times a day as per requirement. This is a natural remedy for treating asthma. It also soothes chest and throat congestion.
Crush some gooseberry and add some honey to it. Consume this twice daily. This remedy acts as a panacea for asthma.
23. Eucalyptus Oil
Eucalyptus oil is one of the effective essential oils for asthma. Pour a few drops of eucalyptus oil on a tissue paper / paper towel and inhale it. Alternatively, keep it bedside you so that you may inhale the aroma.
