Hair is the most integral component of anyone’s beauty. Generally, our hair grow one cm in a month. There are around 100,000 strands of hair on the scalp, and a person usually loses 50 to 100 strands every day. However, when this normal rate exceeds, it may cause baldness. Hair loss is medically termed as alopecia, which is temporary as well as permanent. Symptoms of alopecia vary in men and women. In men, a horseshoe-shaped pattern is exposed on the crown of head while women experience hair thinning. Besides, hair on pillow in excessive amount, and wider partings show that they are suffering from alopecia. In many cases, hair loss is inherited. Other than this, stress, cancer, wearing tight ponytails, over usage of styling products, poor diet, thyroid, menopause, scalp ringworm infections, pregnancy, skin disease like dermatitis, psoriasis, growing age, drugs and medications are some of the common reasons for hair fall. Instead of opting expensive parlor treatments, go for these below mentioned home remedies to stop hair loss without making a dent in your pocket.

Home Remedies for Hair Loss  

1. Coconut Milk

Coconut milk has the richness of protein and essential fats that controls hair loss, stimulates hair growth and nourishes your tissues. Take some water and add freshly grated coconut in it. Simmer it for 3-4 minutes and strain afterwards. Now, apply it on your strands, and massage gently all over the scalp. Keep it for 15 minutes and wash off with a mild shampoo.

2. Curd

Take curd in a bowl as per the length of your hair, and add some black pepper in it. Combine both the ingredients properly and apply this on your hair.  Rinse thoroughly when it dries.

  • Mix either with honey or lemon juice with curd to make hair mask. It also adds moisture to dry hair.

3. Fenugreek Seeds

Proteins and nicotinic in fenugreek seeds promotes hair growth and helps rebuild dormant hair follicles. Soak 1 cup of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Then, grind them to form smooth a paste. Spread it on your hair, and put on a shower cap. After about 45 minutes, wash off your hair. Do it daily for a month to get lustrous locks.

4. Onion Juice

Being packed with antibacterial properties, onion juice wards off germs that cause scalp infection and leads to hair fall. Apply onion juice on the scalp, and shampoo after half an hour.

  • Or else, add 2 tbsp of aloe vera gel in 3 tbsp of onion juice; and spread it on your strands.

5. Indian Gooseberry

Indian gooseberry is a rich source of vitamin C and a natural exfoliant which aids in maintaining a healthy scalp. Take one tablespoon of its pulp and squeeze a lemon over it. Massage thoroughly with the mixture and use a shower cap to cover it. Leave it for a whole night.

  • Take some dried Indian gooseberry; add them to coconut oil. Heat this mixture till the oil turns black. Apply this oil after it cools down. Massage for 15 minutes, and wash after 30 minutes. Do this once a week.

6. Beetroot

Take some water, add beetroot leaves and henna in it. Boil the mixture; and later, apply it on the scalp. Keep it for 15 minutes. Rinse with fresh water. Do this three to four times a week to nourish your strands. You can also include its juice in your everyday diet for healthy hair and accelerate their growth.

7. Flaxseeds

The richness of omega-3 fatty acids induces hair growth and strengthens your locks. Take a tbsp of grounded flaxseeds followed by a glass of water every morning. Or else, sprinkle them on soups, salads and smoothies.

  • Alternatively, include flaxseed oil in your diet or apply it on the scalp.

8. Garlic

Get some garlic cloves and crush them. Now, pour some coconut oil on the crushed cloves.  Stir and boil the mixture for a few seconds. After it reaches room temperature, massage your scalp with it. Wash off after half an hour. Perform this remedy twice a week.

9. Potato Water

Boil some potatoes in water. Strain the water and keep potatoes aside. Allow it to cool down. After shampooing, simply rinse your hair with potato water. This remedy will nourish your hair, and also give you longer hair.

10. Egg

The richness of sulfur and protein in egg makes it an excellent remedy for all the hair issues. Beat one egg and separate its yolk. Add one tsp of olive oil in egg white. Whip it properly, and spread on the entire scalp. Leave it for 20 minutes and wash off with a mild shampoo.

11. Apple Cider Vinegar and Sage Tea

Brew sage tea and add apple cider vinegar in it. Use this mixture to wash off your locks. This checks hair fall and nourishes hair.

12. Camphor

Mix camphor and curd in equal proportion. Apply them on bald patches and wash after two hours.

13. Honey

Take two tbsp each of olive oil and honey, and a tbsp of cinnamon powder. Mix all the ingredients properly to obtain smooth texture. Apply it on your locks, and keep it for 30 minutes. Do this once a week to obtain effective results.

14. Lime Seeds

Crush dried lime seeds and add grounded pepper to it. Combine both ingredients and add water to form a smooth paste. Massage your hair with this paste. Doing this once a week will provide significant results.

15. Alcohol and Pepper

Take 45 ml of alcohol or vodka, and sprinkle a teaspoon of grounded pepper. Now add warm water to this mixture. Rinse your scalp with this concoction once a week.

16. Tobacco Sauce

In order to prevent hair loss, add a few drops tobacco sauce in your favourite shampoo. It is very effective for the treatment of alopecia.

Herbal Remedies for Hair Loss

17. Chinese Hibiscus

Take ten Chinese Hibiscus flowers in a pan, and pour two cups of coconut oil on them. Now, heat the solution for 2 minutes and strain afterwards. Use this oil for hair massage before you hit the hay; and rinse in the morning. Do it two to three times a week for effective results.

  • Alternatively, prepare tea with these hibiscus flowers, and rinse hair with this decoction.
  • Or else, blend some flowers in a food processor and form a thick paste. Add two tbsp of honey. Spread it on the strands, and wash off after half an hour.

18. Aloe Vera

Enzymes in aloe vera promote healthy hair along with hair growth. The alkalizing property of aloe balances the pH level of scalp, and prevents dryness or any infection. Apply fresh aloe vera gel directly on the scalp. Leave it on for a few hours and then wash it off with warm water. Repeat the process three to four times a week.

  • Moreover, you can consume one tablespoon of aloe vera juice on an empty stomach to enhance the effectiveness of above treatment.
  • Mix sodium chloride and aloe vera gel. Apply it on your locks to prevent excessive hair fall.

19. Licorice Root

To prevent the problem of hair fall, one should treat the hair locks with licorice root pack. It opens up the pores, soothes your scalp and reduces dandruff, which also leads to baldness. Take a cup of milk; add one tbsp of grounded licorice and ¼ tsp saffron in it. Combine all the ingredients properly, and apply it before bed time. Wash off in the morning. Do this two time a week to prevent bald patches.

20. Green Tea

The antioxidants present in green tea checks hair fall. Either drink 2-3 cups of this herbal tea or rinse your hair with this decoction.

21. Chamomile

Take a handful of chamomile flowers, and boil them in 250 ml of water. Turn off the heat, and steep the solution for 20 minutes. Use a sieve to strain this solution. Allow it to cool. In the meantime, shampoo your hair; and then apply that herbal decoction on your scalp and hair. Do not rinse your hair with water rather pat your hair dry.

22. Essential Oil

Massage your scalp with an essential oil twice a week. They strengthen the roots of hair, and enhance the blood circulation which promotes hair growth. For instance, you can use coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, lavender oil, rosemary oil, etc.

23. Indian Lilac

Boil leaves of Indian lilac in water until it reduces to half of its quantity. Allow it to cool down and wash your hair with this decoction once a week.

24. Coriander Leaves

Crush some coriander leaves to make a thick paste. Spread it on your strands to prevent the problem of hair fall.

25. Safflower

Massage with safflower oil for 15 minutes to stimulate the hair growth. It increases the blood flow, and helps cure baldness.

26. Curry Leaves

In order to prevent baldness, rinse your hair with curry leaves water. Simply, boil a handful of curry leaves; and allow it to cool. Use this solution to fix all your hair woes.

27. Henna

This herb encloses the hair shaft with a shielding layer that protects it from any damage. The powdered form of this herb is easily available in the market. Use as per the requirement of hair length; and add water to make a smooth paste. Then, leave it for 3 hours. Afterwards, beat one egg, squeeze a lemon and pour some olive oil in the above paste. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly, and spread it all over your hair. Keep it for 45 minutes and rinse with water. Use shampoo to deep cleanse your scalp.

28. Margosa Leaves

Take a handful of margosa leaves. Boil crushed leaves in four cups of water. Allow the solution to cool down. Strain afterwards. Rinse your hair with this solution.

Do’s

  • Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily.
  • Give regular oil massage to your scalp. You can use slightly lukewarm oil.
  • Eat healthy and nutritious food.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Cut down the consumption of coffee and other caffeinated beverage.
  • Clean your combs frequently.
  • Trim your hair every eight weeks, in order to prevent split ends.
  • Include zinc and protein rich foods in your diet.
  • De-stress yourself by practising meditation, as most of the time the root cause of hair loss is tension or anxiety.
  • Wear a shower cap while swimming in the pool.

Don’t s

  • Avoid washing hair with hot water.
  • Say “NO” to junk food.
  • Don’t use styling products excessively, as they damage hair.
  • Cut down the consumption of meat
  • Avoid blow drying, as it damages hair follicles.
  • Avoid brushing wet hair.
