Back acne is as horrible as facial acne or chest acne. Research shows that people who suffer from facial acne are most likely to suffer from back acne as well. However, back acne is pretty difficult to treat as it is not readily visible and hard to reach as well. The main cause of acne is hormonal imbalance. A hormonal imbalance is typical during puberty and is accompanies by an over secretion of estrogen or testosterone. Stress, sleep deprivation, an unhygienic lifestyle, bad eating habits and hectic schedules are some other reasons that can cause acne. Here are some home remedies that will help you know how to get rid of back acne. Visit a dermatologist before you try any of the below mentioned remedies.
Home Remedies to get rid of Back Acne
1. Baking Soda
Baking soda is a natural exfoliator that unclogs the skin pores and balances the skin pH levels. Besides, it gives antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects. To get rid of back acne, dilute the baking soda with water in 3:1 ratio. Apply the paste on your back and leave it on for a few minutes. Rinse it off with warm water. Do this at least twice in a week.
- Alternatively, mix two tablespoons of baking soda, juice of half lemon, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and five tablespoons of honey, and spread it on the acne-prone area.
Note: Moisturize your skin as baking soda may cause dryness.
2. Lemon Juice
Lemons contain citric acid, which is ideal for the treatment of acne. It helps open up the pores and clean them as well. Squeeze a lemon in a bowl and dab it with a cotton bowl on the acne-prone area. Let it stay for a few hours and then wash it off with lukewarm water.
- Alternately, fill your bathtub with water and add rose water and lemon juice in equal portions. Soak in for 30 minutes. Later, wash off with clean water.
Note: Over-usage can make your skin dry. Therefore, it is recommended to use it twice a week.
3. Fuller’s Earth
Fuller’s earth can absorb the excess oil from oily skin. It is ideal for back acne treatment, as it opens up the pores and brightens the complexion. Fuller’s earth is readily available in most of the stores. To make a mud mask you need to combine sandalwood powder, fuller’s earth, and rose water in equal proportions. Now, apply the pack on the affected area and leave it until dry. Clean it with water. Do this once in a week.
Take a cup of cooked oatmeal. Add half lemon’s juice and a teaspoon of honey. Mix them well and rub the mixture on the affected area using your fingertips. Keep it for half an hour and then wash it off with warm water. Do this at least twice a week. It makes the acne dry and reduces swelling.
5. Tomato Pulp
Tomatoes are acidic in nature and comprise of natural bleaching properties. Cut the tomato into half and take out its pulp. Rub it on the acne scars. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water.
6. Turmeric Powder
Turmeric is a strong spice that not only adds flavor to cuisine, but alleviates several skin issues. It has antiseptic and exfoliating properties that effectively cure the problem of acne. Add two tablespoons of turmeric powder to a tablespoon of milk cream. Mix both the ingredients properly. Apply on the back acne scars and leave it on till it dries. Do this at least twice a week for effective results.
Note: Turmeric can leave stains on clothes. Therefore, it is suggested to wear an old t-shirt, while using this remedy.
Garlic has antifungal and antibiotic properties that treats the acne and reduces their scars as well. Crush some garlic cloves to make a paste. Apply the paste on the back and leave it on for a few hours. Wash it off with warm water.
8. Vitamin E Oil
Vitamin E is antioxidant in nature that reduces the acne scars and guards the skin cells against aging. Ask your pharmacists for vitamin E oil capsules. Take out the oil from the capsules and apply on the scars using your fingertips. Leave it on overnight and wash it off in the morning with water. Do this once in a week.
9. Orange Peels
Orange Peels contain retinol that revitalizes the skin and wipes out the dead cells. The vitamin C content in orange helps lighten the skin tone. Dry some orange peels in sunlight. Later, grind those dry peels in a mixer to make a fine powder. Add some water or glycerin to make a paste. Now, apply it on the back and let it dry completely. Wash it off with normal water. You can do this daily.
Cucumber moisturizes the skin and restores its natural layer. Moreover, lighten the bacne scars as well. Extract the juice of two cucumbers and wash your back with this juice two times a day.
- Alternatively, make a thick paste of cucumbers and apply it on your back. Leave it on for 15 minutes. Wash it off with normal water. Follow this remedy every day for better results.
The anti bacterial and anti oxidant properties in honey helps get rid of back acne scars.
Apply raw honey on the acne-prone area and let it dry. Clean it with water. Do this twice a day to fasten the healing process.
The vitamin C in potatoes controls the production of collagen. Besides, it contains niacin and vitamin B that regenerate the skin cells. Take a large potato and peel it. Now grate the potato and massage your back with a potato mash. Leave it on for a few minutes.
Allow it to dry and then wash with warm water.
Onions have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that balance the production of collagen. They are very effective for removing scars in a short time.
Take 2 white onions and a cucumber. Extract their juice. Now, grind a tablespoon of cooked oatmeal’s or fenugreek seeds in a mixer. Mix the entire ingredients and apply the mask on the back. Leave it on for half an hour. Clean the pack with water. Use this method everyday for better results.
Pineapples contain bromelain, a compound that works as an anti-inflammatory agent. Besides, the ascorbic acid present in pineapples reduces the scars. Simply, extract the juice from a pineapple slice. Apply the juice on the back using a cotton ball. Let it stay for 25-30 minutes and then wash it off. Do this every day to get rid of acne scars.
Nutmeg is used for several skin treatments, as it has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory properties and is also an astringent. It helps lighten the acne scars and treats the acne as well. Take a tsp each of nutmeg powder, honey and cinnamon and mix all together. Apply it on the scars and clean after 30 minutes.
Note: Nutmeg can be harsh on the sensitive skin, and it is, therefore, advisable to do a patch test, before you apply it on the back.
16. Apple Cider Vinegar
Dilute a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a tablespoon of water. Dab a cotton ball in the solution and apply it on the acne. Leave it on for a few hours and then wash it off with lukewarm water.
Note: Do not apply ACV directly on the skin, as it can be abrasive.
17. Tea Bags
This is an excellent remedy for getting rid of back acne scars. Cut a tea bag containing green tea and pour into a bowl. Add a teaspoon each of cinnamon, sea salt and sugar.
Pour some coconut oil to make a paste. Spread the paste on the back and gently massage for a couple of minutes. Wash it off with warm water.
18. Sea Salt
Sea salt controls the buildup of bacteria on the skin. Fill a bathtub halfway with warm water. Add 3 cups of sea salt to it. Now, soak your body in the water for half an hour.
Depending on how bad is your acne, you can do this once or twice in a day.
- Alternatively, you can also use Epsom salt as a substitute.
19. Clove Oil
Clove oil is very good for preventing bacne. It’s analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-bacterial and anesthetic properties kill the bacteria and smoothens the skin. Mix 1 teaspoon of clove oil and 10 teaspoons of any carrier oil (such as sunflower oil). Now dip a cotton ball in the oil or use your finger tips to apply the oil on the back.
Note: Do not use clove oil in its pure form, as it may cause irritation.
It is one of the easiest ways to get rid of ugly acne overnight. Toothpaste helps dry out the pimples and also reduces swelling. Apply it on the acne prone area, before you hit the hay and clear it the next morning.
21. Olive oil
It is a natural moisturizer that eventually lessens the appearance of scars. Just take adequate amount of olive oil and apply it on your back acne with a back scratcher. Leave it on for 5 minutes and then using a dry washcloth, wipe it off.
Herbal Remedies for Back Acne
22. Rosewater and Sandalwood
Rose water nourishes the skin, while the cicatrizant and antimicrobial properties of sandalwood powder smoothens the skin and lightens the scars. Get some sandalwood powder and mix it with a teaspoon of rosewater to form a smooth paste. Apply this paste on the back and leave it overnight. Rinse it in the next morning.
Note: You can mix sandalwood powder with milk, oatmeal, turmeric, glycerin, lime juice, fuller’s earth, black gram flour, buttermilk, tomatoes, tea tree oil, cucumber juice and any other ingredient that helps to reduce acne.
23. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil cleanses the pores and destroys all the bacteria, since it is antiseptic in nature. A single drop of tree tea oil is sufficient for healing the skin issues. Follow this remedy three times a day.
- Using undiluted tea tree oil can make the skin dry. Therefore, use a solution that contains only 5% tea tree oil.
- Boys who have not reached puberty should not apply a solution of tea tree oil and lavender oil, as it can have a hormonal effect on their body.
- Never take tea tree oil orally, as it can cause rashes, unsteadiness, etc., and may inhibit a person from walking.
24. Aloe Vera
The soothing properties of aloe vera cure acne in a couple of days. It also removes the scars. Either extract the gel from an aloe Vera leaf or buy readymade gel from a departmental store. Apply the gel on the back and leave it on for a few minutes. Wash it off with water. Do this two times in a day for better results.
Note: People with sensitive skin should wash the affected area with a solution of lemon and water, prior applying the aloe vera gel
25. Indian Lilac
Indian Lilac is loaded with antiseptic and antimicrobial properties that kill the acne causing bacteria. Take some handful of Indian lilac leaves. Crush them to make a paste. Add some water and half a tsp of turmeric powder to it. Now, spread this herbal pack on your entire back. Leave it on for at least 20 minutes. Afterwards, wash it off with warm water.
- Moreover, you can also use neem oil, which is readily available.
26. Witch Hazel
Pour some witch hazel in a bowl. Dab a cotton ball in the solution and apply on the back. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse it off.
27. Fenugreek Seeds / leaves
The inflammatory properties of fenugreek reduce inflammation of the skin. Soak some fenugreek seeds in water overnight. In the morning, boil this water along with fenugreek. Strain the seeds and keep the water aside. Now dip a cotton ball in the water and dab it on the acne. Leave it for the entire day.
Alternatively, make a paste using some fenugreek leaves and spread it on the back. Wash after half an hour.
28. Mint Leaves
Menthol is a natural analgesic and is packed with anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to even out the skin and reduces the itching as well. Crush a handful of mint leaves and add water to make a paste. Apply the paste on bacne and wait for 15 minutes. Wash it with water and repeat again after a few hours. Do this thrice a day.
29. White Willow Bark
White willow bark contains salicin, which helps to dry up the blemish. It is well off with anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties that reduce the breakout of acne. Place white willow bark in a bowl and keep it aside. Now, boil some water and pour it on the bark. Steep it for 15 minutes. Sieve the liquid and add a few drops of witch hazel or any essential oil to this solution. Stir it well and dab a cotton ball in this solution. Apply it thrice a day.
- Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.
- Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
- If you sweat a lot, make sure you take a bath at least twice a day.
- Wear lose fitting clothes.
- Always apply sunscreen lotion before you step out of the house.
- Clean your back and exfoliate the skin on a regular basis.
- Do not eat oily or fried foods.
- Do not pop the acne, as it will leave a scar.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure.
