These days, due to bad food habits and lack of dental care, people suffer many dental problems, out of which a toothache, also termed as ‘dentalgia’ is most common. Mostly, the toothache arises out of tooth decay, but there are a lot more reasons like an abscessed tooth, a damaged filling, tooth fracture, infection in gums, dry socket etc. that can lead to this problem. Loss of minerals from the teeth makes enamel weak and leads to inflammation and ache. Pain is followed by hot and cold sensitivity, swelling around the tooth, fever or a headache, foul-tasting discharge and bleeding from gums. If this pain lasts for more than 2 days, you may feel pain on opening your mouth wide. Now the problem is how can one get rid of a toothache? If you are going through any of these problems, you need to consult a dentist and for a temporary treatment, you can opt in for some home remedies that are listed below.
Home Remedies to Cure a Toothache
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties which make it a great natural remedy for a toothache. It has acetic acid and malic acid which purifies and detoxifies your infected tooth. It also balances pH level of your mouth that fights tooth decay. Dip a cotton ball in the mixture and keep on your affected tooth or gum for some minutes. For satisfactory results repeat it 3-4 times a day.
Note – If it feels too strong for you, dilute it by adding some water.
2. Saline Water
You can use saline water which is one of the easiest methods to get relief from a toothache. Salt takes off the fluid from the swollen tissue of gums. It has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that reduce swelling and pain and also combat bacteria which lead to infection. Mix 1tsp salt in a glass of warm water, swirl it around your mouth and spit out. Repeat the process till it gives you comfort.
3. Ice Pack
Another natural method to get rid of a toothache is an ice pack. This remedy is excellent for the swollen tissues of your tooth and gum. Wrap a cloth around the ice pack. Hold it on the cheek near the aching teeth for some minutes. It relieves you from the unbearable pain as it numbs the affected area.
4. Vanilla Extract
It is another popular toothache remedy which helps numb the pain and has a calming effect. Dip a ball of cotton in it and place it on the affected area. It is a great natural remedy to treat it.
5. Baking Soda
A mixture of baking soda with some lukewarm water works best on the paining tooth. Rinse your mouth with it. It balances the level of pH in your body thus eliminates bacteria. It can provide you instant relief from pain.
Note – Let the soda dissolve in water completely.

16. Black Pepper
‘Piperine’ a component of black pepper can reduce a toothache by triggering transient receptors in the body which leads to relief from pain. Prepare a paste using black pepper, salt and water and apply it on the tooth and gums.
17. Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne pepper has capsaicin that is a natural pain reliever. Crush some fresh cayenne pepper and add apple cider vinegar and a pinch of ginger powder to make a mixture. You can apply this directly to the hurting tooth.
Anti-oxidant properties of avocado offer great relief from a toothache. You just need to roast the avocado seeds and crush them to make a fine powder. Apply this powder on the infected tooth and cover with a cotton ball.
Note – Pregnant women should not use avocado.
Asafoetida has powerful properties to kill the bacteria that lead to a toothache. Moreover, it also relieves the pain. Make a mixture of powdered asafetida and lemon juice, warm it and apply it to the painful tooth. It provides you instant comfort.
Antibacterial, antiseptic and antimicrobial properties of turmeric provide instant relief to your painful tooth. Make a paste of turmeric powder in water and apply it on the problem tooth with the help of a cotton ball. You can also chew raw turmeric if you like.

23. Clove Oil

Note – Too much of clove oil can be toxic.

25. Plantain Leaves

26. Guava Leaves

30. Homemade Essential Oils
There are certain essential oils that can work best for your oral problems and toothaches. These oils include Myrrh oil, Eucalyptus oil, and Frankincense, Rosemary and Melaleuca oils. You can also make toothpaste or mouthwash using these oils to prevent oral problems.
31. Oil of Oregano
Oil of oregano has inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Thus, it can be used for the treatment of a toothache. Make a mixture of oregano oil with olive oil or lukewarm water. Drench a cotton ball in the mixture and apply it on the affected area.
Myrrh has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It kills bacteria and soothes your painful tooth. For this, you need to boil myrrh in water and when it get cooled add some amount of this solution in water and swish the liquid in your mouth 5 to 6 times every day.
