Diarrhea is a disorder that occurs due to improper functioning of the digestive system. The main symptoms of diarrhea are loose motions and an increase in bowel movement. It is accompanied by dehydration, fever, bloating, weakness, painful cramps and vomiting. In many cases, the root cause of diarrhea is the indigestion of food. However, it is often due to a bacterial infection such as shigellosis or amebiasis from contaminated water or from not washing raw fruits and vegetables before eating.  Chronic ailments such as food intolerances, and intestinal diseases like ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease bowel syndrome can also lead to loose bowels. Home Remedies for Diarrhea

1. Apple

Apples contain pectin which is what helps diarrhea by hardening the stool. The potassium and vitamin C found in apples help keep your body hydrated.

2. Black Tea

Make a cup of tea and do not add any milk to it. You can use honey instead of sugar and a few drops of lemon juice to improve the taste. Drink two cups of black tea every day till you feel better.

3. Vinegar

Those who have a severe case of diarrhea can mix four tablespoons of vinegar and one tablespoon of brown sugar in a glass of water. Drink a glass of this mixture every 6 hours. It may taste weird, but is an ideal remedy for diarrhea.

4. Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS)

Make a homemade ORS solution by mixing six teaspoons of sugar and ½ teaspoon of salt into 1 liter of clean drinking water. Drink the solution in an hour. Try drinking as much ORS in 12 hours as possible for better results. You can also get readymade flavored ORS sachets from your local chemist. ORS is an excellent diarrhea remedy for infants as well.

5. Lemon Juice

Mix the juice of 1 lemon with a glass of water and add a little bit of honey to make it taste like lemonade. Drink 3-4 glasses of it in a day. It will help reduce acidity and counteract the bacteria.

  • Lemon rind is also an effective cure for diarrhea. Simply grind a lemon with the peel and add a pinch of salt to it. Mix well and take this three times a day.

6. Yogurt

Yogurt that contains live lactobacillus acidophilus or bifid bacterium bacterial cultures which is extremely good, as it helps body reinstate the good bacteria in your body. Eat two to three bowls of yogurt a day. Add a pinch of salt and some cumin powder to it.

7. Carrot Soup

Carrot has anti dyspeptic properties which make it an ideal food for children, as it helps their body recover the nutrients lost due to diarrhea. One should have a bowl of carrot soup everyday when suffering from diarrhea.

8. Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek seeds contain mucilage which is ideal for diarrhea treatment. Mix a tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in a bowl of yogurt and have this mixture three times in a day.

9. Apple Cider Vinegar

Add a tablespoon of ACV to a glass of plain water and drink a glass of this solution at least twice a day.

10. White Rice

Many people often wonder what to eat for diarrhea? It is recommended that you eat bland foods as they are easy to digest. Consume a small bowl of plain white rice mixed with yogurt. Do not add any other spices or sauces to this.

11. Bananas

Ripe bananas contain potassium and pectin- a water-soluble fiber. Eat 4 to 5 bananas during the day to overcome diarrhea.

12. Potatoes

Boil a few potatoes until they become soft. Then remove the peel and smash them. Add a pinch of salt, a little bit of pepper and a teaspoon of butter. Eat them.

13. Black Seed Oil

How to stop diarrhea with black seed oil? Simply add a tablespoon of black seed oil to a bowl of plain yogurt and eat at least two bowls of this mixture until the diarrhea is cured.

14. Honey

Honey has antiseptic properties which protect the stomach from bad bacteria. You can choose to consume a teaspoon of honey every day or mix it with your black tea, ginger juice or lemon juice. Drink this mixture to stay hydrated.

Note – It is not advisable to give honey to infants as it can cause botulism.

15. Ginger

Ginger tops the list of foods for diarrhea. It is also effective for children. Add grated ginger to a cup of water and boil it for five to ten minutes. Strain and cool the water and drink a tablespoon after every hour. This will help fight all the bad bacteria and increase the circulation of blood in body.

16. Orange Peel

Dry a few orange peels and then grind them to make a powder. Add the powder to a glass of drinking water and consume 2-3 glasses of the same. Add a teaspoon of honey to enhance the taste.

17. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of the best spices for treating diarrhea as it kills bacteria present in the stomach. Add a teaspoon of cinnamon powder to a glass of warm water and drink it every day.

18. Vanilla Water

It is one of the old remedies to treat diarrhea. Take a tablespoon of pure vanilla and add 6 ounces of water to it. Add a pinch of sugar. Sip the liquid. Wait for half an hour before you take the second dose.

19. Corn Flour

Fill ¼ glass of water and add 4 tablespoons of corn flour and a pinch of salt to it. Mix well and drink it for instant relief.

20. Turmeric

This natural treatment for diarrhea is safe for children as well. Simply mix a teaspoon of turmeric in a bowl of yogurt and consume it. Yogurt fights the bad bacteria while the turmeric checks indigestion. Or else, add a little bit of turmeric in your white rice.

21. Soda Bicarbonate and Apple Cider Vinegar

Add 1 teaspoon of soda bicarbonate to a glass and pour 10 ml of hot water over it. Now add 1 teaspoon of ACV and 1 liter of mineral water to it. Mix well and drink it several times a day.

22. Custard Powder

Mix 2 teaspoons of custard powder in ½ a glass of water and drink this solution.

23. Mustard Water

Dry roast a teaspoon of mustard seeds in a pan. Once they start to crackle, add water (1 glass) to it and allow it to boil. Strain the liquid and add a few drops of honey to it so as to improve the taste.

24. Sesame Seeds and Goat Milk

Crush about 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds. Make a thick paste by adding 2 tablespoons of goat’s milk to it. This is one of the excellent remedies to cure diarrhea.

25. Butter Milk

Blend 1 cup of yogurt with ½ a glass of water using a hand mixer or blender. Add a pinch of black salt and ½ a teaspoon of roasted cumin seeds to it. Drink at least 3-4 glasses of buttermilk a day.

26. Coriander Seeds

Add a teaspoon of coriander seeds in a cup of hot water and let it steep for a while. Now strain the liquid and sip it to cure diarrhea.

Herbal Remedies to Cure Diarrhea

Here are some natural remedies for diarrhea which will help ease your discomfort to a great extent.

27. Chamomile Tea

Make a cup of chamomile tea and drink it several times a day. Add chamomile flowers and a tablespoon of peppermint leaves to a cup of boiling water. Steep it for at least 10 minutes. Finally, strain and drink it.
