Another cause of acne in women is hormonal imbalance during the menstrual cycle. Scientifically known as Acne Vulgaris, pimples generally appear on the face, back, neck and shoulders. Home Remedies for Treating Pimples

1. Lemon Juice

Mix rose water and lemon juice in equal proportion. Apply it on the affected skin and rinse off after ½ an hour. Use this remedy continuously for 3-4 weeks to get rid of pimples.

  • Lemon juice can also be mixed with an equal quantity of groundnut oil. Apply it on the face to cure the problem.
  • Alternatively, prepare a paste by combining sandalwood powder and lemon juice. Application of this paste on skin reduces pimples to a great extent.
  • A combo of cinnamon powder and lemon juice also works wonders for the acne-prone skin.

2. Honey

Mix 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder and 3 tablespoons of honey. Apply the resultant paste on the face and keep it overnight. This remedy works as a quick cure for pimples. A facial mask prepared by mixing honey and grated apple also serves as an excellent treatment for acne.

  • Alternatively, add lime juice and a teaspoon of honey in a glass of warm water. Stir well. Drink it on an empty stomach, in the morning. It flushes out the toxins from the body and also maintains the pH of the skin, thereby, keeps the pimples at bay.

3. Garlic

Rub garlic on the affected area many times a day. Though it smells pungent, but is one of the most effective home remedies for pimples. Moreover, add garlic to your food as it purifies blood and prevents breakout of acne.

4. Tomatoes

Apply the pulp of raw tomatoes on your face. Let it stay for an hour. Then rinse off with water. Along with reducing pimples, this remedy will bring a natural glow to your face. However, you must use this remedy for a couple of weeks.

5. Potato

Potato is one of the most effective home remedies for pimples. Grate a potato and extract its juice. Soak a cotton ball in this juice and apply it on the affected area. Or else, cut a potato in thin slices. Put these slices on the pimples. It will also reduce the blemishes making your skin clear and flawless.

6. Orange Peel

Since orange is loaded with vitamin C and citric acid, it is considered as one of the best ingredients to rejuvenate your skin. It also helps heal several skin problems including acne. Dry some orange peels in the sun. Grind them to make a powder. Now add some rose water to form a paste. Apply it all over your face. After 15-20 minutes, wash off with cool water.

7. Ice Cubes

Give your pimples a cold therapy to make them less noticeable. Wrap some ice cubes in a cloth. Place it on the pimples to reduce inflammation and redness.

8. Toothpaste

Before hitting the hay, dab a small amount of toothpaste on the acne. In the morning, you will notice that the size of the pimple has reduced considerably.

9. Papaya

An enzyme, called papain, found in papaya helps reduce inflammation and averts the formation of pus. Mash the flesh of a raw papaya and spread it on the face. Wash it off with warm water after 15-20 minutes. Apply the moisturizer. Application of papaya juice can also cure the pimples and acne naturally.

10. Pomegranate

Take some pomegranate peels and roast them. Grind them to form a powder. Add lime juice to it. Apply this paste on the pimples. Use this remedy on a regular basis.

11. Nutmeg

Add raw milk to grinded nutmeg. Spread the resultant paste on the face. After 1-2 hours, rinse it off. It will not only cure the pimples, but will also remove the scars.

12. Fuller’s Earth

Prepare a paste by mixing water or rose water and fuller’s earth. Use it on the affected skin. It is a tested and tried remedy for pimples, and also absorbs excess oil from the skin.

13. Sugar Scrub

Exfoliate your skin to remove sebum, dirt and dead cells from the skin, which are the major causes of pimples. Mix brown sugar and honey in the ratio of 3:1. Apply this mixture on the face and rub gently in circular motion. Let it dry and then wash off with cold water.

14. Cinnamon Pack

Take some cinnamon powder. Add gram flour and honey to it. Apply it all over the face. Once it dries, rub in circular motions. After 12-15 minutes, rinse off with water. Besides fighting off pimples, it also brings a radiant glow on your face.

15. Oatmeal

Oatmeal reduces redness and swelling associated with pimples. It also exfoliates your skin and absorbs the excess oil. All you need to do is cook a cup of oatmeal. Allow it to cool. Add juice of ½ a lemon and 1 teaspoon of honey to it. Apply it and let it stay for 15-20 minutes. Afterwards, rinse off with lukewarm water.

16. Cucumber

Apply grated cucumber on the face and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. For the best results, add 2-3 tsp of lemon juice to it. Alternatively, place cucumber slices on the affected areas.

17. Baking Soda

The antiseptic, inflammatory and exfoliating properties of baking soda make it an amazing home treatment for pimples. Mix a little amount of water in 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda. Spread the paste on your face. Wash off after a few minutes. Or else, mix 5 tablespoons honey, juice of ½ a lemon, 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder, and 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda. Use this remedy 1-2 times a week.

18. Castor Oil

Melt equal quantities of castor oil, glycerine, and lanolin on very low heat. Store this cream in a small jar. Gently rub on the pimples twice a day.

19. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar regulates the pH balance of skin and kills the acne causing bacteria. Mix ACV and water in 1:3 ratio. Apply this solution on the zits with the help of a cotton ball.  Wash off with water after 10 minutes. Reapply 2-3 times a day. Rub moisturizer after every application.

Note – Don’t overdo as it will dry out your skin, triggering the sebaceous glands to secrete more sebum, which will ultimately result in outbreaks.

20. Aspirin

Take 2-3 aspirin tablets. Crush them into a powder. Add some water to make a paste. Spread it on the face. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with water. This is the best remedy to get rid of pimples fast.

21. Steam

Boil water in a pot. Drape a towel on your head and lean forward over the pot for 10-15 minutes. Now, remove the towel. Pat your face dry. By using this remedy, clogged pores will open up and turn dirt free, which will make your face clearer.

22. Cabbage

Mash some fresh cabbage leaves. Apply the poultice so obtained on the affected areas. Leave it on for ½ an hour, and then rinse off.

23. Egg White

Egg whites are an inexpensive and easy way to rebuild your cells and make your skin acne-free. Besides providing nourishment to your skin, they also absorb excess oil. Beat 2-3 egg whites until they turn frothy. Apply 2-3 layers of it on your face with your fingertips. Let it stay for 15-20 minutes. Use warm water to rinse it off completely. Pat dry and apply moisturizer.

24. Strawberries

Both strawberries are a great treatment for pimples. Mash 3 strawberries (don’t over-mash; otherwise, they will turn runny). Add 2 teaspoons honey to them. Apply the mixture on your face and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Then wash off with warm water. If you feel dryness on your skin, apply moisturizer. Use this remedy 2 times a week.

  • Or else, top off a strawberry and cut it into slices. Rub a slice on the affected skin. Rinse off after 15-20 minutes.

25. Banana Peel

Rub the inner side of banana peel on your face in a circular motion. Lutein, a powerful antioxidant present in banana peel, wards off the pimples and also promotes healthy cell growth.

26. Avocado

Mash avocado pulp and add some honey to it. Apply this paste, and rinse off with lukewarm water after 20-25 minutes. Rub moisturizer as per your skin type.

27. Mustard

Mustard is a good source of zinc, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, vitamin C and salicylic acid. All these ingredients do wonders to skin. Mix 1 teaspoon unfiltered honey and 1/8 teaspoon mustard powder. Apply this mask on pimples. Allow it to stay for 12-15 minutes. Finally, rinse off with water.

28. Rice Flour and Gram Flour

Add ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of gram flour to 1 teaspoon of rice flour. Prepare a paste by adding 1 teaspoon raw milk to the mixture. Apply this smooth paste on your face. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

29. Olive Oil

The anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties of olive oil help treat acne and pimples naturally. Take 1/8 teaspoon of lemon juice. Mix ¼ teaspoon of olive oil in it. Apply it on your face. Rinse off after a few minutes.

Herbal Remedies to Cure Pimples

30. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant and antiseptic. Mix 1 part tea tree oil with 9 parts water. Apply this diluted solution on the pimples thrice a day.

Note- Never use tea tree oil directly on the skin as it will result in over drying, redness and irritation on the skin.

31. Hibiscus

Boil 2 cups of water. Add 3 teaspoons hibiscus to it. Steep it for a few minutes. Strain it, and add a little honey to sweeten it. Drink it up. Don’t throw away the residue obtained after straining the tea. Instead, apply it on the pimples. Keep it for 8-10 minutes. Finally, rinse off with water. Both ways will help you get rid of those annoying zits.

32. Green Tea

Place a green tea bag in 1 cup of boiling water. Steep it for 4-5 minutes. Strain the solution. Using a soft cloth or cotton ball, apply it on the affected areas. Alternatively, make ice cubes of green tea. Rub one of them on the pimples. Repeat this remedy 2-3 times a day. The astringent properties of green tea will soothe the skin and reduce the swelling.

33. Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera is a good herbal remedy for acne and the scars caused by acne. Its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties heal the problem just within a few days. Take an aloe vera leaf, cut it in the middle, and squeeze the gel. Apply it on the affected area two times a day.

34. Witch Hazel

The astringent properties of witch hazel make it an excellent zit zapper. Soak a cotton ball in witch hazel and apply on the pimples for 1-2 minutes.

35. Fenugreek

Crush some fenugreek leaves. Add water to prepare a paste. Apply it on your face and leave it on for the whole night. In the morning, wash it off. This herbal remedy is very effective for those who have dry skin.

  • Another option is to grind 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds to form a powder. Add a little warm water. Apply this herbal paste for 20-25 minutes. Finally, rinse off with water. Use this remedy twice or thrice a week to get rid of acne.

36. Mint Juice/Coriander Juice

Mint juice soothes the irritated skin and also helps ward off pimples. Crush some fresh mint leaves and squeeze them to take out the juice. Apply this juice on the affected area with a cotton ball. You can also use coriander juice in place of mint juice.

37. Basil Leaves

Basil is one of the most used therapeutic home remedies for acne. Add 2-3 teaspoons of basil leaves (dried) to 1 cup water. Boil it for 12-15 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool down. Use it on the acne-prone skin. If used regularly, this remedy will cure the pimples naturally and quickly.

38. Indian Lilac (Margosa)

Indian lilac is a well-known home remedy for pimples and acne. The blood purifying, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties of margosa check pimples. Grind some dried or fresh margosa leaves. Add fuller’s earth (1 teaspoon), raw milk and turmeric powder (¼ teaspoon) to the resultant paste. Mix all the ingredients properly. Spread the mixture on the face. Wash off with warm water after 20 minutes.


  • Drink adequate water.
  • Include wheatgrass juice, seeds, grains, vegetables and fresh fruits in your diet.
  • Rinse your face with cool water twice or thrice a day.
  • Remove makeup before hitting the hay.
  • Wash your bed cover and pillowcase at least once a week.
  • Stress causes hormonal imbalance which results in acne and pimples. Do yoga and meditation to overcome stress.


  • Do not scrub or wash the skin repeatedly as it may worsen the problem.
  • Avoid squeezing the pimples; otherwise, it will result in scars.
  • Refrain from fried, fatty and junk foods as they decelerate the healing process.
  • Do not touch your face with hands frequently.


  1. Love these tips. I use zit clay & tea tree oil, too (also recommended by my esthetician). But I also go to her probably once every other month to do a deep-clean acne facial (even if I don’t have any acne), because it really just cleans everything out. Ever since I have started doing that, I have had little to no breakouts in the last 3 years!
